ANDERSON, Ind. — An Anderson man was arrested Sunday night after police say he threatened a bouncer with a knife inside a southside tavern.
Corey A. Champley, 47, of the 500 block of West 33rd Street, remained in the Madison County Jail on Monday after his arrest for an alleged altercation at Jimbo’s, in the 3100 block of Main Street.
According to a probable cause affidavit, officers responded to a call about a fight at the bar shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived, a Jimbo’s security guard told officers that a man who had pulled a knife and threatened a bouncer had left the premises after police were called.
The bouncer told police that Champley and another man started an altercation in the bar and were asked to leave, the affidavit said. The men were told to wait for a cab in the bar’s breezeway, but the unidentified man went back inside the bar, at which time the bouncer attempted to physically escort him from the building.
Champley then rushed in and pushed the bouncer, who pushed back, according to the affidavit, which said Champley then “pulled a knife out of his pocket and taunted (the bouncer) to come out and fight.”
The bouncer told Champley he was calling police. The affidavit said the bouncer “advised that he was in fear for his life as well as the safety for the patrons that were trying to get into the bar.”
Police said when they arrived that Champley had just walked around the tavern and was heading east when he was stopped and found to have two knives in his pockets. As police tried to handcuff Champley, the affidavit said he pulled away ”then turned in an aggressive manner” toward an officer “as if he wanted to fight” before he was subdued.
Champley was held on $10,000 bond, charged with Class C felony intimidation, Class A misdemeanor resisting arrest and Class B misdemeanor battery.
