ELWOOD, Ind. —
The Elwood Community Schools board is proposing a different approach than most to finding an interim superintendent.
The board held a public hearing Monday evening at the district’s administrative building where it proposed the use of a hiring firm, Administrator Assistance, instead of appointing a person within the corporation.
Administrator Assistance uses a network of retired school administrators with expertise in a variety of areas to assist school districts, according to administratorassistance.com.
Board President Bob Savage said there are multiple advantages to this approach such as saving money, the firm having the ability to send someone else if the chosen interim is sick or doesn’t provide the service sought and having an entire firm to get answers from if any issues arise.
“We’re not real committed. We don’t have to give any notice,” Savage said, adding the board can terminate the contract at any time and doesn’t have to “risk good service” by getting stuck with someone who just isn’t working out.
The proposed interim superintendent contract includes these terms:
u The interim superintendent will receive a daily compensation of $555.
u The individual will not be eligible for compensation or any form of benefits from Elwood Community Schools.
u The independent contractor will provide interim superintendent services for at least three days a week effective Dec. 17. However, the board and independent contractor may mutually agree to adjust the number of days per week if needed.
u The contract may be terminated by either party at any time for any reason.
Savage said the board will keep its options open and likely make a decision regarding the interim superintendent during a special meeting at the administrative building, 1306 N. Anderson St., at 7 p.m. Dec. 5.
The board has begun its search for a new superintendent using various websites and hopes to name one by late February or early March, Savage said.
Superintendent Glen Nelson announced his resignation, effective Jan. 8, at a school board meeting in October.
He’s been in the role since 2010 and is retiring after 36 years in public education.
Board member Sandy Ratliff added that the search is a long process.
“We want to find the right guy,” Savage said. “But at the same time, early enough to get (the new superintendent) familiar.”
