Hoosier Salon coming to AU
The Hoosier Salon’s 84th annual exhibition, “From Grand Tradition to Artistic Edge,” exhibit is on display at Anderson University’s Nicholson Library through Friday. This exhibit is free and open to the public. The paintings vary from contemporary to traditional style. Independent, out-of-state jurors select pieces from submitted slides with final selections coming to Indianapolis for prizes and awards. This year, 570 works were entered and of those 157 works were selected for the exhibit representing 125 artists. Nearly $35,000 has been awarded to the artists represented. AU will host 15 of the works, three of which hold merit awards. The exhibit remains one of the largest competitions in the Midwest. The Hoosier Salon moved to Indianapolis in 1941 and was exhibited at the Indiana State Museum in 1990, where it is still today.
For membership, artists are required to be residents of Indiana for at least one year. All art except photography and porcelain are accepted into the show. Members of the Hoosier Salon are diverse with rich Hoosier histories. Some are professional artists while others are amateurs just starting out. This year, approximately two-thirds of the work from the show will travel to 34 different locations around the state.
