Jail inmate attempts escape

ANDERSON — Madison County Detention Center officers found evidence Wednesday of an inmate preparing to escape, according to a press release.

The release said Wednesday morning, officers found mortar removed from the joints around cement blocks under James Pierce Jr.’s bed during a routine inspection. They also found a rope made out of sheets and “other items of interest,” the press release said.

Pierce has been held at the detention center since Nov. 18 on charges of Class B felony burglary, Class D felony theft, Class D felony possession of a firearm, Class A misdemeanor carrying a handgun without a license and two counts of probation violation. The press release said authorities are requesting that four charges be added in relation to the attempted escape: three counts of Class B misdemeanor criminal mischief and Class C felony attempted escape.



Sobriety checkpoint in Delaware County

REDKEY — The Indiana State Police Redkey District will conduct a sobriety checkpoint Friday during the late evening hours in Delaware County. The checkpoint is an effort to reduce alcohol-related crashes. Troopers will also look for other alcoholic beverage violations and take appropriate enforcement action. Motorists are encouraged to have their driver’s license and vehicle registration ready when entering the checkpoint to minimize delay time.



Trash collection schedule as usual

ANDERSON — Regularly scheduled trash collection will continue as usual this week, despite the Thanksgiving holiday. For more information about trash collection dates and times, citizens may contact Best Way Disposal at 649-7272.



AFT donates to charity

ANDERSON — The Anderson Federation of Teachers has approved donations this holiday season for those in need.

Monetary gifts of $500 were given to each of the following organizations: St. Vincent DePaul, Salvation Army, Christian Center and Second Harvest Food Bank.
