ANDERSON, Ind. — A compilation of news items from the Madison County area:

Lapel, Anderson hosting fire shows

ANDERSON — Professor Steve’s Wild Water & Fantastic Fire Show will be at the Anderson Public Library’s Lapel Branch at 2 p.m. today. A second show will be in Anderson at 6 p.m. in the Chief Anderson Room at the Main Branch at 111 E. 12th St.

Professor Steve will examine and demonstrate the different properties of water, ice, steam and fire, culminating in a grand finale complete with sparks, fire balls and confetti.  



Pets celebrated at New Horizons

ANDERSON —  New Horizons United Methodist Church, 611 E. 53rd St.,  will host a “People and Pets Extravaganza” from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. A pet blessing will be followed by a competition by Indy Dog and Disc. Local dog owners can enter dogs in Frisbee competition.

There will be craft and gift vendors, and children’s activities.

The church is also sponsoring “Pounds for Pets” donations for local pet shelters. Pet food, litter, blankets, towels, Dawn dish detergent, and bleach are needed. Free hot dogs and lemonade will be served.



Community clothing giveaway Saturday

ANDERSON — A clothing giveaway for families in need will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the main lobby of Meadowbrook Church, 36th and Main streets. Clothing sizes range from infants to adults.

Summer Festival set for First Baptist

ANDERSON — On Saturday, from noon to 5 p.m., a Summer Festival is planned at First Baptist Church, 907 N. Raible Ave.

Activities will include vendors, a car show, musical entertainment, arts and crafts, games, horse rides and inflatable fun for children. Food will also be available. Parking will be available just north of the church.

 

Back to School event scheduled for Aug. 7

SUMMITVILLE —  A Back to School Extravaganza will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Summit Convalescent Center, 701 S. Main St.

All area school-age children and their families are welcome. Play games, eat food, receive free school supplies and have fun before the summer is over. For more information, call Jennifer Flowers, 536-2261.



‘Great Expectations’ nominees sought

ANDERSON — Madison County Young Professionals Group and Boy Scouts have announced the establishment of the “Great Expectations Award.”

Nominations are due by Thursday, Aug. 12. Nominees must be for people under 41 years of age, who live and work in Madison County, and show significant leadership and involvement within the community. Beef & Boards schedules auditions

INDIANAPOLIS – Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre has scheduled adult general auditions for cast actors for the 2011 season.

Auditions are by appointment only and are Saturday, Aug. 14, at 9301 N. Michigan Rd.

Adult singers and dancers ages 18 and older are needed. Additional audition and appointment information is available at www.beefandboards.com. The deadline to reserve an appointment is 5 p.m. Aug. 12.
