Back in the News for Feb. 7

The Herald Bulletin looks back at stories published in the Anderson Daily Bulletin and The Anderson Herald newspapers.

10 Years Ago — 2000

Feb. 7 — Anderson police took 15 minutes to arrest three people in connection with an armed robbery occurring late Saturday of a patron leaving Linders on the Point. According to APD Detective Mike Anderson, police were called to Linders about 11:30 p.m. The victim told police he was approached by three men in the parking lot, one brandishing a handgun, who robbed him of his wallet and $20 in cash. A description of the three people and the truck was broadcast. A uniform officer noticed the truck at the Village Pantry at 53rd and Main streets. The officer questioned the suspects. Two men and a woman were arrested.

Feb. 8 — Now that Kroger has taken over operation of the eight Pay Less Super Markets in Anderson and Lafayette, efforts are being made to bring a union to the employees. The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 700 started a full-court press to get a majority of the former Pay Less employees to join. Lee Piercey, organization director for Local 700, pledge that the Indianapolis-based union will make sure a majority of the workers sign union enrollment cards. “Our agreement with Kroger provides that once a majority of the workers enroll with the union, they will fall under the terms of the contract.”

Feb. 7 — A former Pendleton Police Department captain – who had been serving as acting director for Madison County’s Special Olympics organization – was arrested and charged with embezzling more than $6,000 from the group’s funds. Michael S. Pollock, 36, 1000 block of Broadway, Anderson, was arrested by city police on a Circuit Court warrant charging him with theft, a Class D felony. Anderson Police Sgt. Larry Gwaltney said detectives recently completed a month-long investigation into the organization’s missing funds. Authorities reportedly found that a number of checks had been made out to businesses for more than the amount owed to them.

Feb. 8 — Seven county residents and a west Anderson juvenile were arrested when Anderson Police Department narcotics officers, detectives and uniform policemen converged on a Lincoln Street residence and discovered a large quantity of marijuana inside the house. Police also confiscated nearly $1,000 in cash believed used in the purchase of the controlled substance. The home’s resident was charged with possession and maintaining a house of common nuisance. Six others were charged variously with possession or visiting a house of common nuisance. A 16-year-old westside boy was charged with juvenile delinquency, possession of marijuana. APD narcotics officers said drug activities within the home had been under surveillance for the past several weeks. Authorities estimate some 10 pounds of marijuana were confiscated.

50 Years Ago – 1960

Feb. 7 — Six men were being held for investigation of a series of robberies, taking an estimated $4,000 in safe jobs and armed robberies. A check is also being made of clues that might solve the year-old murder of Gus Knight. The 71 year-old Knight, a deputy Madison County surveyor, was the victim of an unsolved robbery murder believed committed a year ago today. Police Chief John Heiden confirmed six men were being held on preliminary charges of armed robbery and conspiracy. He said the multiple arrests were made after arrested Homer Branham confessed his part in at least three major city and county robberies.

Feb. 9 — Irregularities of $7,620.94 in the water utility accounts of Robert F. Handy, former clerk-treasurer of Edgewood, were made public by the Indiana State Board of Accounts. The audit covered the period from Jan. 1, 1956, to Dec. 31, 1959, and revealed the shortage was made up almost entirely of water bill collections not accounted for in 1957-59. Handy made up the deficit Jan. 25, and resigned the same day. Report of the audit was sent to Madison County Prosecutor Melvin B. Thornburg for submission to the grand jury which is now in session.

100 Years Ago – 1910

Feb. 9 — The City Council may be asked to levy a tax on public billiard and pool tables to gain several hundred dollars revenue annually. City officials say that there are probably 30 or more such rooms in the city and that a tax of $25 annually on each one of them would result in revenue which the city needs and which should be collected. That the tax ,if levied, would raise a howl is expected for the pool and billiard rooms which have had an easy time of it for several years.

Feb. 9 —The dancer’s ball given by the German Liberal society in Swain’s dancing academy last night was one of the best they have ever had. There were at least 200 people present, and nearly all of them were masked. Mrs. Margaret Klaer won first prize, Clara Pearson second and Ova Mulford third for best maskings. Harry Niblock and Miss Pearl Webber led the grand march.
