The Herald Bulletin looks back at stories from the Anderson Daily Bulletin and The Anderson Herald newspapers.
10 Years Ago — 1999
July 21 — Having received almost 100 complaints of racial discrimination against Guide Corp., the director of the Anderson Human Relations Department hopes to resolve the cases within 30 days. According to a city spokesperson, Guide had not been formally put on notice of any suits filed over its hiring practices.
July 23 — Members of the Anderson Police SWAT Team visited the Paradise Escort Service and came away with drugs, a ledger listing customers and the 25-year-old alleged proprietor of the service. The 9:30 p.m. evening raid at 2437 Pearl St. pleased neighbors, who turned out to applaud as police searched the house.
25 Years Ago — 1984
July 19 — Anderson's 49 degrees set a record, being the coldest recorded temperature for that date. It also was the record low temperature for central Indiana for the entire month of July.
July 21 — A local car dealer discovered he got more than he paid for when an employee discovered a live grenade in an abandoned vehicle. Police said the car had been towed to the Indiana State Police's Pendleton Post in February after it was abandoned along I-69. The vehicle was sold to the dealer in a state auction.
50 Years Ago — 1959
July 21 — Last evening at 715 N. Nursery Road, a shot rang out and a wounded man said, “Momma I’ve shot myself!” The wounded 22-year-old man had loaded his .22-caliber revolver and for safety reasons, decided to unload it when the gun exploded and struck him in the abdomen.
July 28 — Residents of Anderson will be offered the opportunity of having their chests X-rayed without charge. The service was provided by the Madison County Tuberculosis Association in cooperation with state and local boards of health.
100 Years Ago — 1909
July 23 — The Spiritualist camp at Chesterfield was aglow with electricity last night when the lights were turned on for the first night of the annual camp meeting of the Indiana Association of Spiritualists. A couple of buildings that long stood as “seance rooms” were converted into sleeping quarters. President O’Neil regards the seance rooms a nuisance, he said, and there will be no more built by the association so long as he is president.
