Broncos eliminate Liberty Christian

Six-run sixth propels Daleville

MUNCIE, Ind. — A Bronco stampede kicked off the first game in the 2010 Wes-Del Softball Sectional, as Daleville defeated the Liberty Christian Lions 8-2 Monday night.

The Broncos scored six unanswered runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and had solid pitching from freshman Jaime Roberts.

“We’ve been strengthening our defense and our bats in the late season,” said Daleville head coach Christy Myers. “We had people step up tonight on their bats that hadn’t before, and Jaime kept Liberty off-balance.”

The Broncos took the lead in the bottom of the first, after Shelby Spencer drove Karsen Corn home for a run. The Lions responded shortly after with a run scored by Erika Lindley in the top of the second.

The give-and-take continued as senior Katie Phillips singled in the second to bring home Erin Mason and pushed the Broncos to a 2-1 lead. But the Lions were able to once again deadlock the score after pitcher Karon Earley doubled in the top of the third to make it 2-2.

Earley went on to pitch two scoreless innings and had a total of six strikeouts on the night.

“Karon has been consistent all year, and she has been a major player for us,” said Liberty Christian head coach Treva Earley. “Our defense was amazing, and I am very proud of these girls.”

In the bottom of the sixth, Daleville broke the game open with six runs, including another RBI from senior Phillips.

Despite an attempt at a rally in the top of the seventh, Spencer was able to close out the game and solidify the victory for the Broncos.

The Lions finished the season 6-14, a big improvement from their earlier 1-10 start to the season.

“Our bats and defense kept improving, despite the fact that we had injury after injury,” said Earley. “Daleville just got a big momentum boost in the sixth, and they did a good job.”

The Broncos face the Southern Wells Raiders today at 6:30 p.m. in a semifinal matchup.
