Elwood beats Daleville

ELWOOD, Ind. — The Elwood boys basketball team used a strong inside game on its way to a 55-43 victory over Daleville on Saturday night.

Junior forwards Jared Bourff and Anthony Bennett each had 16 to lead the Panthers. James Tungate had 16, and Elliott Jackson added 13 for the Broncos, who played hard but couldn’t close the gap in the second half.

“We were definitely trying to get some post feeds and get some opportunities there,” said Elwood coach Corey Jackson. “We wanted to get them (Bourff and Bennett) both on the low block.”

“We were a little stronger and a little bigger, and it worked last game,” said Bourff, who had 23 to go with Bennett’s 19 against Anderson Preparatory Academy in Elwood’s previous game. “So let’s go to it again.”

After a tight but sloppy first quarter — Daleville had seven turnovers to Elwood’s four — that ended 12-9, the Panthers surged ahead 28-16 midway through the second. Daleville fought back to within eight by halftime, but never drew closer.

“It was a hard-fought game,” said Jackson. “I was very impressed by Daleville. They play extremely hard; they’re very scrappy.”

“We just made some mistakes down the stretch,” said Daleville coach Corey Scott. “We’d go on a run, and then we’d make some mistakes. They’re big, and their size bothered us.”

When Liberty Christian’s Austin Castor lined up for the 300-meter hurdles, he did so with one goal in mind — advance to the regional.
His goal was like the other 248 student-athletes at the Mt. Vernon Sectional track meet, but Castor’s chance to run during his senior season was nearly shattered. When the Lions faced Elwood during basketball season, Castor sustained a fractured left femur.
