MUNCIE, Ind. —
The Muncie High School Bowling Regional started off Saturday with the singles event. The boys side produced five local bowlers out of the 14 to advance to semistate. Pendleton Heights’ Matt Robey qualified 10th with a 620, and Lapel’s Connor Hickey finished sixth with a 638 series.
The step-ladder one game roll off started with No. 4-seed Dylan Holford of Pendleton Heights against No. 3-seed Craig Monroe (655) of Muncie South. Holford couldn’t get anything going as Monroe was consistently finding the pocket. Holford fell 257-154. Monroe then faced off with another Pendleton bowler, Steven Pursley (657), the No. 2 seed. Pursley bowled well with a 198, but Monroe was in the zone, bowling a 247.
Alexandria’s Mason Ward qualified as the top seed with a 703 and faced off with Monroe. The game seemed to be anyone’s as they both matched each other throughout. Ward finished first with a 202, forcing Monroe to mark in the 10th frame. Monroe answered with a spare, giving him a fill ball that produced a nine count to finish with a 205.
The girls’ side produced one local to advance, and she did it with a bang. Not only did Emily Young of Alexandria qualify, she was the top seed with a 652 series, 99 pins over the No. 2 seed. Waiting through the first two matches for her chance to claim the title, she came out strong, easily defeating her opponent, No. 2-seed Emily Cain of Knightstown, 180-153. This gave Young the title of regional champion.
The team event was just as successful for Alexandria as the Tiger boys claimed the crown in the Muncie Regional, just as they did the sectional crown. Alexandria qualified on top with a 2,883 series after two team games and five baker games. Pendleton finished in the No. 4 spot with a 2,813. The top five teams advance to the semistate to be held at Southern Bowl in Greenwood.
The top-four team step-ladder finals pitted Pendleton Heights against No. 3 qualifier Richmond. After two baker games, Pendleton came out on top, winning 392-333. Pendleton then faced No. 2-seed Muncie South. The Arabians couldn’t put it all together, and they fell 393-332. Muncie South then faced No. 1-seed Alexandria. The wait didn’t seem to hinder the Tigers as they won both baker games to claim victory with a final of 372-325.
The Alexandria girls came away with the No. 1 seed also, shooting a 2,529 series. The Tiger girls did not fair as well as the boys and fell to No. 2-seed Wapahani, 407-337 in the finals. The top-four teams on the girls side advance.
Those advancing will travel to Greenwood’s Southern Bowl next Saturday to do this all over again. The singles will begin at 9 a.m., with the team event scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.

Helberg nabs Little 500 pole
Following a rain shower and cooler than normal May temperatures, drivers were having problems finding grip around Anderson Speedway on pole day qualifying Thursday for the Pay Less Little 500.
California driver JoJo Helberg went out early in the qualifying session and captured the first Little 500 pole of his career with a four-lap average speed of 80.56 mph and the quick lap of the day at 81.17 mph. -
Family affair in Lapel sectional
It will be like a new episode of “All in the Family” when the Lapel baseball sectional championship game is held on Monday.
In Thursday’s semifinals, Frankton rolled past Shenandoah 10-4 and then Lapel scored seven runs in the sixth inning on its way to a 10-3 thrashing of Wapahani. -
Trio leads area at boys regional
The Ben Davis boys track regional is one of the toughest in the state.
“THE toughest,” according to Anderson coach Cary House.
It’s proven on the track year after year as runners from Brebuf Jesuit, Lawrence Central and the host Giants torch the competition.
But Madison County made its presence known in the field events this year. -

There was some debate overnight about whether Curtis Wilson would return to the mound Thursday when Anderson’s Class 4A sectional game resumed against Richmond.
But the Indians senior never had a doubt. -
Arabians roll to softball sectional title
Pendleton Heights leadoff hitter Sarah Dixon set the table, and Arabians starting pitcher Bailey Benefiel made sure the visitors got none of the food.
The Arabians stopped Greenfield 7-1 Wednesday night to claim the sectional title. -

For only the fourth time in school history and second year in a row, the Wapahani Lady Raiders are softball sectional 40 champions after a 9-4 win Wednesday over the host Frankton Lady Eagles. As with all championships, it did not come easy.
