FRANKTON, Ind. —
It was no contest Tuesday night as the Frankton boys basketball team celebrated Senior Night with a 76-36 blowout win over the Cowan Blackhawks.
Trevor Hughes and Tanner Walters were the two seniors on display for the Eagles (14-5). Hughes went for 16 points and seven rebounds while Walters got two points and two boards.
Hughes knocked down the first bucket of the game, and the Blackhawks’ Kyler Burch scored to knot things at 2-2. Frankton would rattle off the next 26 points before the visitors scored again.
Frankton had a commanding 39-12 lead at the half, and they outscored the Blackhawks 37-24 in the final 16 minutes to walk away with a dominant win.
Eagles coach Brent Brobston felt like his squad set the tone in the first half, and he felt like it was a fitting way to send his seniors out.
“I thought we played hard in the first half, and accomplished what we needed to,” he said. “It was a good Senior Night, and Trevor and Tanner played well. Everybody got some minutes. It turned out well for us.”
Brobston said he told his team before last night’s game that he didn’t want them to overlook Cowan (5-12), and he felt like his players followed his advice.
“The one thing in this type of game here is (that) you look ahead or look past your opponent, and I didn’t want to do that and I didn’t think we did that and I was really happy,” said the Eagles’ coach. “I thought we were very aggressive defensively and really stuck with what we wanted to do in the game plan tonight.”
Brobston was already looking to Friday’s game against Alexandria, which could secure the Eagles a Central Indiana Championship with a win.
“I think it’s actually probably good for us,” he said of the easy win. “We’ve got Senior Night then we look ahead to Friday here, and it’s Homecoming Friday, and we get the chance to win the conference — play for a conference championship. It’ll be a great environment.
“I think Alex is a good team, I really do,” he added. “I think they’ve got some nice players. It’s going to be a tough test for us Friday, and we’ll be ready for it.”
Frankton was led by the 23 points of Aaron Korn. Hughes also led his team with seven rebounds.
Cowan was led by 13 points from Stewart Kerr, and Calvin Furniss led the team with five boards.

Cottrell, Buck win regional titles
It didn’t take long for Pendleton Heights junior Kiawna Cottrell to stake her claim to a spot in the girls track state finals at Tuesday night’s North Central Regional.
On her first attempt at the long jump, the Arabians met the state standard of 17 feet, 4 inches.
“That started the night out right,” Pendleton Heights coach Melissa Hagerman said.
It only got better from there. -
Eagles soar into sectional final
On a warm and windy Tuesday evening, four teams hit the field at Frankton with a chance to play for the Sectional 40 softball championship. The host Frankton Eagles grabbed the first spot in the final with a dominating 24-0 win over Winchester.

PH’s 3 homers lift softball team
Pendleton Heights hit a trio of home runs and Arabians starting pitcher Bailey Benefiel came within two outs of a no-hitter in a softball sectional semifinal here Tuesday evening.
The PH clouts came from Sarah Dixon, Elizabeth Sigler and Jordan Dean, and they covered everything but a grand slam as the Arabians bounced New Castle 15-2. PH will play in today’s championship game at 7:30 p.m., against Greenfield-Central. -

Pendleton Heights faced two powerful opponents Tuesday in the girls tennis regional at Marion — 16th-ranked Delta (21-2) and winds gusting to 30 mph.
The combination was too much to overcome in a 5-0 loss that ended the most successful season in school history. -

Arabians follow Vellinga's lead
If the student-athletes who took the field in Monday night’s sectional softball action needed a bit of motivation, they could have looked to pitcher’s circle at Legends Field where Andrea Vellinga stood and threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Pendleton Heights battled Richmond in the opening game, as the Arabians ran past the Red Devils 10-0 in five innings. Game 2 featured Anderson and New Castle, with the Indians getting trounced 10-1. -
Bulldogs outslug Raiders in Class 2A thriller
Shenandoah sent 24 batters to the plate and scored nine runs in the final three innings of its Class 2A softball sectional opener Monday at Frankton.
And the Raiders (15-12) were the losing team.
Lapel (10-13) failed to reach base in 13 straight at-bats from the end of the second inning to start of the seventh and rallied from deficits in each of the final two innings to beat Shenandoah 12-11 in an eight-inning postseason classic. -
