FRANKTON, Ind. —
Frankton had a near-perfect first quarter and parlayed that and Aaron Korn’s 34 points into a Central Indiana Conference win here Friday.
The Eagles survived 35 3-point attempts by Mississinewa to defeat the Indians 80-66. Frankton is now 8-7 and 4-1 in the CIC.
Frankton was prepared for the long-range barrage from its foe.
“We knew they would dribble drive and dish,” said Frankton coach Brent Brobston. “We wanted to play them at arm’s length. I thought we played good defense against them, but they really stepped up and hit some tough shots.”
The Indians were 13-of-35 from beyond the arc with three different players hitting three or more.
But nobody on the visitors’ team could match the all-around play of Korn. He hit 65 percent of his 20 shots, all but one of his six free throws and collected a team-high 13 rebounds.
“He really gets his shots in the flow of the offense,” said Brobston. “He doesn’t force anything.”
Korn had plenty of support in scoring and rebounding. Austin Compton scored 14 points and had six boards. Trevor Hughes added seven points and 10 rebounds. The team’s lone senior, Jeremy Jenkins scored nine points.
Mississinewa had just four turnovers compared to nine for the Eagles, but the Indians lost all of that advantage and then some by getting whipped on the boards 41-20.
“I thought that was key for us,” said Brobston. “With them shooting all of those 3s, I knew there would be long rebounds. I knew we had to block out and we had to be quick to the ball.”
Most of the second half fell into a familiar pattern. Frankton would push the lead out to double figures and then Mississinewa would put together two or more 3-pointers to remove the breathing room.
Finally the Eagles got to a place where they could use the strategy that sealed the victory.
“I thought we did a good job of running the four corners, spreading it out and making them foul us,” said Brobston.
When Frankton went to the line on this night, it was equivalent to going to the parking lot and starting the Indians’ bus. In the final quarter Frankton hit 17-of-18 charity tosses.
Frankton remains in possession of its own league destiny.
“If we win out, we’ll at least win a share of the conference,” said Brobston.
Frankton has conference tilts remaining against Blackford and Alexandria. The Eagles host Daleville tonight.
