Eagles prepare with many familiar faces

Boys basketball team comes off historic season

FRANKTON, Ind. — It is almost an embarrassment of riches for the Frankton boys basketball team.

The Eagles are coming off a season of historic proportions. They posted a 14-11 record and while that might not, at first glance, seem all that impressive, the finish certainly was.

Frankton won all three sectional games to claim the first such title in boys basketball history at the school. “Success is a good thing,” said Frankton coach Brent Brobston. “It pushes your program in the direction you want it to go. What we did last year meant something to the community and to the players. The players have come in eager and ready to work.”

What’s more, they have all but 13 points per game coming back from that squad. Neither of their top two scorers are even seniors.

“We are further ahead of where we have been at this time in past seasons,” said Brobston. “There are some new things we’re trying to do. We spotted some things last year and over the summer that we needed to change. We don’t want those things to be exploited.”

Junior Aaron Korn is arguably one of the best players in the area. A season ago he poured in 23 points per game and he did it in a most efficient manner. He hit 59 percent of his 2-point shots and 39 percent of his attempts beyond the arc. He also averaged nearly nine rebounds.

“Aaron has grown another inch and he’s put on 10 pounds of muscle,” said Brobston. “What’s really good about him is that he’s so unselfish. He a good teammate. He will get things done by going through our system.”

Right behind Korn was sophomore Austin Compton, who averaged 10.6 points and was not far behind Korn in shooting accuracy. He hit 55 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3-point range and averaged nearly 6 assists per contest as the team’s floor general.

Graduation only claimed Jeremy Jenkins. “Jeremy was a good leader as our senior,” said Brobston. “That’s one thing we’ll have to replace. But I think we’ll get that done by committee. We’ve got a number of players who have shown leadership abilities.”

Frankton will wait until Wednesday before opening the season at home against Eastern. The Eagles will play a scrimmage Saturday afternoon against Adams Central.

“I think the players are ready for our scrimmage and then to get the season started,” said Brobston. “We’re excited. This is a really good group. We know this is a new year. We’ve got a lot of goals but we’ll have to work hard to reach them.”
