ANDERSON — Colin Proctor broke through for his first Indiana Golf Foundation age group championship in spectacular fashion Friday.
Proctor completed the second day of competition on the Indiana National Golf Club’s Silver course as the only player out of 37 in his Boys 14 age group under par.
Back-to-back rounds of 1-under 71 left Proctor at 2-under for the event and five shots in front of his nearest opponent, Oliver Gibson of Fort Wayne.
“This is one of my favorite tournaments,” said Proctor, who had finished second twice and third once in three previous trips to the age group championships, by phone after returning home from the event.
He said the course played to his strengths this week.
“The front was pretty tight and narrow, but the back was pretty open,” Proctor said. “The greens weren’t too fast. They were smooth.”
He played from the same tees he had last year as a 13-year-old. But the results were far different.
A combination of technique and naturally added strength has added yards to his game, and that extra distance came in handy against the state’s best.
“This year, I hit it pretty good,” he said.
Proctor wasn’t the only Anderson player to bring home an age group crown.
Rachel Johnson made up a two-shot deficit Friday to tie Emily Lewellen of West Lafayette for the title in the Girls 12 division.
Anderson’s Morgan Nadaline finished eight shots behind Harley Dubsky of Valparaiso to finish second in the Girls 13 division, and Anderson’s Kennedy Windlan tied for third in the Girls 15 division — three shots back of winner Anna Gleixner.
Anderson’s Natalia Campbell finished third in the Girls 10 division.

Pendleton Heights sophomore Kiawna Cottrell was just that player Tuesday as the Arabians advanced to the second round of sectional play with a 55-45 victory over Greenfield-Central.

The last time these two girls basketball teams met on Jan. 17, Anderson defeated Connersville 83-74 in overtime. Lady Tribe coach Chad Cook knew the Spartans would come out with a chip on their shoulder ready for revenge in Tuesday’s opening round of the Class 4A sectional.

Back in November, the Frankton girls basketball team handled Shenandoah by 29 points. Tuesday’s sectional opener at Shenandoah wasn’t as easy, but the end result was the same as Frankton moved on with a 44-43 win over the host Shenandoah Raiders.

And as is so often the case, the more experienced team came out on top. Madison-Grant survives, advances
Madison-Grant girls basketball coach Kyle Douglas reminded his team before Tuesday’s Class 2A sectional opener that the state tournament marks the beginning of a new season. With 4.6 seconds remaining against Alexandria, Argylls senior Taylor McNutt held the first game of that new season in her hands at the free-throw line. She calmly made her first attempt, and wild scramble for the loose ball erupted when her second try glanced off the rim. The clock expired before either team could gain possession, and Madison-Grant (14-8) escaped with a 58-57 victory and a ticket to Round 2.

Purdue basketball fans took time out Saturday in the middle of a heated rivalry game with Indiana to honor Anderson High School graduate Troy Lewis, whose No. 23 jersey hangs from the rafters at Mackey Arena.
