Area roundup: Raven women fall in opener


COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

St. Mary’s 72, Anderson 33

The Anderson University women’s basketball team lost to St. Mary’s on Tuesday in the season opener in South Bend.

Tiffany Bowsher led the Ravens with eight points and 14 rebounds, hitting four of seven shots from the field. Lauren Leisure had 10 points, and Ellen Thompson added four points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.

AU shot just 26 percent from the field compared to 40 percent for the Belles. St. Mary’s had the advantage in rebounds (39-35), assists (15-8), turnovers (22-36) and steals (27-11).

AU (0-1) hosts Muskingum on Friday in the AU Tip-Off Tournament. The game will be carried live on the Internet from O.C. Lewis Gymnasium at 8 p.m.



GIRLS BASKETBALL

Shenandoah 60, Blue River 34

Three Raiders scored in double figures as the team cruised to its first win of the season.

Michelle Fites led the way with 14 points,and Emily Eller and Leighann Pittsford added 13 each. Pittsford and Brittany Lyons, who finished with eight points, led the way with six rebounds each.

Shenandoah (1-1) travels to Cambridge City Lincoln on Saturday.



International 31, Liberty Christian 25

Karon Earley scored 12 points, and Shelly Lehman added eight for the Lions.

Liberty Christian (0-2) travels to Elwood on Friday.
