PENDLETON — All of the suspense was gone by halftime.
Pendleton Heights rolled up a 33-12 halftime lead over Shenandoah in the girls portion of a basketball double-header here Friday night and Mur Hagerman had nine points, enough to put her over the 1,000-point plateau.
When all 32 minutes had been played, Hagerman had 13 points on the night and 1,006 for her career. The Arabians had 70 compared to just 21 for the visitors.
In fact, the 21 points had a familiar ring for one of Hagerman’s teammates as that was the number scored by Hannah Douglas. She decided to celebrate the occasion of Hagerman’s milestone by hitting all nine of her shots from the field. Her only miscue was missing one of two free throws she attempted in the opening quarter.
After the game, Hagerman posed for photos with her coach Shari Doud and with her parents and brother. She held a ball commemorating the achievement.
Under her name was a blank space. “How many did I have tonight?” asked Hagerman. “Well, right now it’s 1,006. Hopefully I’ll score a few more before I’m done. When I play my last game, then it will go in the (trophy) case.”
Hagerman joins some elite company in the PH record book.
“I look at the players who are on that list and it is some of the best players ever in this area,” said Hagerman. “It is an honor to on a list with them. They are the players I grew up wanting to be like. Hopefully I can be a role model for some girls who are coming up now.”
Susan Lester tops the list, followed by Angie Hupfer, Megan Hupfer, Kelly Huntzinger and now Hagerman.
“She has been a little gym rat since I first met her when she was in fourth grade,” said Doud. “She has an incredible passion for the sport and it’s nice to see all of her hard work pay off.”
Douglas’ 21 and 13 more from Jamie Hubble on Friday is evidence of a trend that has been true throughout Hagerman’s career. “It’s nice that my entire career I had been surrounded by really, really good players,” she said. “I knew how far I was from it and I knew if I came out and played my game that I’d probably get it.”
Just about everywhere on the stat sheet there was evidence of the blowout.
Shenandoah had 26 turnovers to just six for the Arabians. PH shot 28-of-60 and the Raiders were 7-of-26. The home team outrebounded the visitors 33-22.
Junior Hannah Cooper had six points and was the leading scorer for the Raiders.
The PH win was the fifth straight over Shenandoah in the series. Friday’s result was far from typical as in the nine years that Doud has been the head coach, four of the games have been decided by six points or less.
“I like to play (Shenandoah coach) Todd Salkoski’s teams because they hustle and play hard,” said Doud. “It was our goal not to get outhustled. I liked our energy tonight. We’re starting to play consistently with a lot of energy.”
The Arabians are 7-3 and the Raiders 6-4. Pendleton Heights will host Lapel this afternoon and Shenandoah plays at Union on Wednesday.
