ANDERSON, Ind. —
The high school bowling semistate held Saturday at Cooper’s Sport Bowl narrowed down the field of local bowlers, advancing only two individuals and one team to the state finals next weekend.
Mason Ward of Alexandria and Austin Mefford of Anderson will bowl at Mike Aulby’s Arrowhead Lanes in Lafayette next weekend for a shot at the individual crown.
Ward qualified first with a 744 series. Second place was 92 pins out with a 652. Mefford and Zah Weidman of Franklin Central bowled to a tie for third at 650.
In the stepladder roll-off, Mefford fell to Weidman, 212-197, finishing fourth. Weidman fell to Cameron Clark of New Palestine, 246-195. Ward was defeated by Clark in the championship match, 205-170, for a second-place finish.
After Saturday, the only local team left standing was the Alexandria boys squad. Alexandria qualified second with a 2,707 series.
The stepladder roll-off pitted three seed Franklin Central against four seed Noblesville. Noblesville won the match 338-295, advancing to face Alexandria.
Alexandria defeated Noblesville 338-285 to move on to the championship match, where the Tigers fell to Evansville Reitz 367-321 to settle for a second-place finish.
The state finals begin Saturday with the individual competition at 9 a.m. and the team event at 1 p.m.
