FAIRMOUNT, Ind. —
Most coaches will do anything — within reason — to spark his basketball team after a half that didn’t go so well.
Such was the case with Jason Chappell after his Liberty Christian boys basketball team shot 1-for-14 from the floor in the second quarter and trailed Madison-Grant 28-21 at halftime.
“I used sarcasm,” explained Chappell. “I told them, ‘Now let’s panic. Let’s panic.’”
Perhaps the Lions need to panic more often.
They put up 50 points in the second half and defeated the Argylls 71-58 here Tuesday night.
But maybe even more potent than the halftime speech was the play of senior Terrence Campbell.
Campbell hit all but two of his shots from the field and all but one of his free throws on his way to a game-high 23 points — all from the bench.
“That was the missing link we’ve been needing off the bench,” said Chappell. “I’m glad to see that out of him and I’m glad to see it for him. We kind of rallied around him.”
But Campbell’s scoring was far from the entire package. His quickness and anticipation spearheaded a defensive swarm that forced the home team into 15 second-half turnovers.
“I thought I filled my role well,” said Campbell. “I brought a lot of energy. When my defense gets going, my offense just comes through.”
He had an idea he might be headed for a good shooting night.
“I was feeling it in the warm-ups,” he said. “We took this as a big game. We knew (Madison-Grant) just beat Frankton.”
Campbell wasn’t the only one who made significant contributions for the Lions. Junior Preston Quinn hit half of his 20 shots on his way to a 22-point outing to go with his seven rebounds. He scored 14 of his points in the second half. Chris Nunn scored 11 despite being hampered by foul trouble and Remington Emery pulled down nine rebounds.
The Argylls were paced in scoring by senior Jeremy Johnson with 20 points. Austin Engle added 12.
Madison-Grant overwhelmed Liberty on the boards, 47-27.
Senior Jake Lemon was a beast, pulling down 14 rebounds, and Engle grabbed eight.
“We have so many kids involved in so many things that we really haven’t had time to prepare,” said Chappel. “We have just had to go with the flow.”
The Lions (10-3) will now wait a week before playing again on Tuesday at home against Elwood.
Madison-Grant dropped to 5-8.
The Argylls will play at home Friday against Eastbrook.

Defending champ Alexandria and Pendleton Heights barely had gotten underway Friday afternoon when heavy rain caused the suspension of the final match. -
