Kathleen Jarvinen

July 9, 1958 - Oct. 13, 2010

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Kathleen M. Jarvinen, 52, of Lafayette, died Oct. 13, 2010, at St. Elizabeth East.

Born July 9, 1958, in Anderson, she was the daughter of Henry McLain (wife, Barbara Douglas) of Anderson and Helen Kell Van Hook of Lafayette. She graduated from Madison Heights High School and from Purdue University with a degree in elementary education. She also graduated from the John Roberts Power Modeling School.

On Oct. 16, 1993, she married Denis Jarvinen in Attica, and he survives.

She taught in Champaign, Ill., for 10 years, and was currently vice president of Strategic Measurement and Evaluation, Inc. She was also president of Kozy Cape Inc., a company which she started that manufactured hand-crafted apparel for nursing home residents.

She was a member of St. Mary Cathedral in Lafayette. She was an excellent seamstress with a knack for fashion, an award-winning flower gardener, and was an active and caring guide in her children’s and granddaughter’s lives.

Surviving with her husband and parents are three sons, Jonathan Commons (companion, Leah Lampton) of Indianapolis, and Austin Jarvinen and Alexander Jarvinen, both at home; a daughter, Jennifer Rowell (husband, Philip) of Chicago; a sister, Sharon McClintock (husband, Jerry) of Anderson; and two brothers, Stephen McLain of Lafayette and John Michael McLain (companion, Rose) of Knoxville, Tenn.

Also surviving are a granddaughter, Lily Rowell of Chicago; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Soller-Baker Funeral Home on Twyckenham Bouvelard in Lafayette.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of Saint Mary with Father Eric Underwood officiating. Interment will be in  Meharry Cemetery.

Those wishing may contribute to the American Cancer Society; envelopes will be available.
