ANDERSON — Virginia B. (Hoppes) Rakes, 89, of Anderson, passed away Sept. 3, 2010, at Community Hospital Anderson, after a brief illness.
She was born March 26, 1921, in Madison County, the daughter of Asa Raymond and Bessie Pearl (Lindamood) Hoppes, and had lived in Anderson since 1985.
In 1985, she retired after 25 years of exemplary service with the U.S. Army, working in the Pentagon, where she received many commendations and monetary awards for her dedication and loyalty.
Virginia was a member of Pendleton Christian Church.
She is survived by her son, John W. (wife, Jerrie) Rakes of Sarasota, Fla.; her daughter, Betty L. Rakes of Anderson; grandson, Kevin (wife, Stephanie) Rakes of Dayton, Ohio.; two great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Hoppes of Anderson and Janet Hoppes of Pendleton; and several nieces and nephews, including Ken (wife, Beth) Hoppes of Pendleton and Jane Ann Skinner of Fortville.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Rakes; brothers, Francis, Harold, Raymond, Robert and Charles Hoppes; and sisters, Doris Cassidy and Eva Miller.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Community Northview Care Center and Community Hospital Anderson for the special care given to Virginia.
Graveside services will be held at noon Tuesday at Grovelawn Cemetery in Pendleton, officiated by the Rev. Claude Creel.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home, 515 E. 53rd St., Anderson.
