Donnie Flecker

Feb. 17, 1944 - March 14, 2013

ALEXANDRIA, Ind. — Donnie Flecker, 69, Alexandria, died March 14, 2013, at IU Health/Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, after an extended illness.

He was born Feb. 17, 1944, in Alexandria, the son of Joseph P. Flecker and Alice (Rainbolt) Flecker.

Donnie graduated from Alexandria-Monroe High School-Class of 1962. He worked at Delco Remy, formerly of Anderson. He also served with the Indiana National Guard. Don’s first love was Mother Nature and her world. He worked all over the country moving from one seasonal planting to the next. For more than 20 years he worked at re-planting over a million trees to replace those trees harvested for paper mills. While living in Tennessee, he built his own log cabin home which was featured on the cover of a national magazine. Obviously he enjoyed anything that was outside including gardening, camping and bicycling. He was also an avid reader and writer. Don was a free and gentle spirit in tune with Mother Earth. A quote attributed to him was “It’s hard for a man to survive without nature.”

Survivors include three children, Brad Flecker of Alexandria, Bryan Flecker of Jacksonville, Fla., and Michelle Jones of Elwood; two sisters, JoAnn Richards and Margaret (Steve) Goodman, all of Muncie; brother, Richard (Jeanne) Flecker of Nashville, Ind.; grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive; and special friends, Michael and Kathy Prentice.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Mary Lou Thomason.

At Don’s request, cremation has taken place. A private Celebration of Life gathering will take place at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions are suggested to The Arbor Day Foundation in Don’s memory through the funeral home.

Family care and cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Owens Funeral Home in Alexandria.
