John C. Boyer I

ALEXANDRIA, Ind. — John C. Boyer I, 78, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at his residence.

John was born in Huntington County on Oct. 16, 1934, the son of Chester F. and Laura C. (Douglas) Boyer, and was a graduate of Rock Creek Township High School. He received his bachelor of arts degree in 1958, his master of arts degree in 1962 and his Extended Degree in Education Administration in 1976, all from Ball State University. John proudly served in the United States Army.

John was a teacher, coach, and principal for more than 32 years before retiring from Anderson Community Schools. He was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church, Muncie Elks Club, Alexandria Elks Club, and Moose Lodge 331.

Survivors include his wife of more than 58 years, Marlene Boyer, Alexandria; two sons, Bradly Boyer, (wife, Jackie), Alexandria, and John C. Boyer II, (wife, Marilyn), Fort Wayne; two daughters, A. Jolene Hetzner, (husband, Michael), and Betsi Johnson, all of Fishers; a brother, Dale Boyer, (wife, Ginger), Tuscola, Ill.; a sister, Carolyn Sevey, (husband, Richard), Nevada; 10 grandchildren, Justin McCormick, (wife, Tricia), Jenifer Ricketts, (husband, Hank), Brenna Johnson, and Kali Johnson, all of Fishers, John C. Boyer III, (wife, Cara), Cumberland, Jessica Vanstrom, (husband, Ean), and Samantha Boyer, all of Fort Wayne, Andrew Pittenger, (wife, Debbie), Muncie, Julie Overla, Eaton, and Chase Reagan, Dallas, Texas; eight great-grandchildren, Grayson and Evie Boyer, Ethan Boyer-Vanstrom, Dylan Ricketts, Christopher McCormick, Jacob Overla, and Gwen and Drew Pittenger; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert; three sisters, Garnet, Betty, and Janice; and a son-in-law, Randy Johnson.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Riverside United Methodist Church, 1201 N. Wheeling Ave., Muncie, with Pastor John Young officiating. Burial will take place in Markle Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.

Friends may call at Parson Mortuary from 4 to 8 p.m. today or one hour prior to time of service at the church.
