ANDERSON — Donald was born in Anderson, on Oct. 16, 1916, the son of Albert S. and Olive M. McGranahan.
He spent his early youth in Franklin, where he graduated from the Indiana Masonic Home High School. He married Vivian (Whiteford) McGranahan in 1939, and they resided most of their lives in Anderson.
As a graduate of the Indiana Institute of Mortuary Science, he was associated with the Waltz & Hiday Funeral Home in Anderson as a licensed embalmer and licensed funeral director.
In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and took his training in the medical corps at McIntyre Dispensary and the U.S. Naval Hospital, Great Lakes, Ill. He was then assigned to the amphibious forces, Solomons, Md., for further medical training. He reported aboard the USS LCI (L) 412 (Landing Craft Infantry) as a 1st Class pharmacist mate and took part in the D-Day Invasion, Omaha Beach, Normandy France June 6, 1944. He was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1945.
For 21 years, he was the Indiana Sales Representative for the Champion Co., Springfield, Ohio, retiring in 1981 when he and his wife moved to Wildwood, Fla. His wife, Vivian, died in 1984. He married Miriam (McMinds) McGranahan in 1987, and they resided in Vero Beach, Fla.
He was a 50-year member of Fellowship Lodge 681 F&AM; in Anderson; a member of the BPOE Elks Lodge 1774 in Vero Beach, Fla.; life member of the USS LCI Landing Craft Infantry National Association; life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3918, Vero Beach, Fla.; a member of the American Legion Post 39 in Vero Beach, Fla.; and a member of the AMVETS Post 15 in Fort Pierce, Fla.
In 1992, he was appointed as the Florida State Director for the USS Landing Craft Infantry National Association and in 1996 was appointed to the National Board of Directors. At the 1994 National Convention in Orlando, Fla., he was awarded a plaque from the President of the Association in appreciation for the new members he recruited in Florida and for his work as State Director.
He is survived by his son, Ronald McGranahan of Freeport, Maine; two grandsons, Robert McGranahan of Naples, Fla., and Richard McGranahan of Washington, D.C.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with the Rev. Bill Mathys officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 266 Ceremonial Honor Guard.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. and continue to the hour of the funeral service with Masonic rites at 2:30 p.m. by Fellowship Lodge at the funeral home.
