Roger M. Helbling

Jan. 11, 1951 - March 17, 2010

ANDERSON — Roger Merrill Helbling, 59, husband of devoted wife Terri, entered peacefully through the gates of heaven after battling like a stalwart soldier, a three-year extended illness, in his home in Anderson.

He was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to DeVon and LeEtta Helbling. Roger was the eldest son followed by Dalyn and then Errol. His fondest childhood memories were from his childhood in Wilmore, Ky., while his father taught at Asbury College. Eventually, they moved back to Elkhart, Bloomington and Anderson, to be near family and teach in the universities.

Roger attended both Madison Heights and Anderson High Schools and then Warner Pacific College.

Roger was a member of numerous heritage groups and served as lieutenant commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Commander of the Military Order of the Stars and Bars and was a Kentucky Colonel.

Roger was a very proud “Son of the South” and wore the butternut and gray proudly. Roger worked mainly in retail pharmacy management and then for 23 years at Pendleton Correctional Facility as an officer and received promotion to correctional counselor. He always gave his whole heart to help those he served.

He resided in Anderson most of his adult life opting to stay near his family. He had a fondness for the Pacific Northwest, but his heart was in the South.

Hobbies included genealogy and an endless pursuit of his family’s history. He was a member of Valley Grove Freewill Baptist Church.

Roger was most proud of his daughters, Angela Owens and Myrletta Blades; son-in-law, Shawn Blades; stepchildren, Jesse, Brian, Crystal and Amber Kayne; his grandchildren, Seyly, Tiana, Tyler, Clayton, and Wyatt Blades and Riley Sheets; nephews, John and Wesley Helbling, will carry on his love for history and pursuit of real truth. He had numerous friends, Bertie and Bennie, Mike Thomas, Butch Hammond, Jennifer Rinker, Bill and Yolanda Stinson, Jerry Stamm and others greatly appreciated by too numerous to mention. Rufus his standard poodle was his buddy.

Roger was preceded in death his father, DeVon; mother, LeEtta; and brother, Errol.

Services will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service. Family and friends viewing from 4 to 6 p.m., and funeral at 6 p.m., co-officiated by Pastors Joe Roysden and Dalyn Helbling. Family and friends are encouraged to participate in memoriam.

His wife Terri on behalf of his beloved grandchildren for their college expenses will accept memorial contributions in lieu of flowers.

Thank you to Dr. David Mares and Brandon Aiman, God’s hand servants. In Roger’s words “Deo Vindice” God justifies us.
