William L. Barker

July 1, 1931 — March 20, 2010

LAPEL — William Louis “Bill” Barker, 78, of Lapel, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Community Hospital Anderson, following a period of declining health.

He was born July 1, 1931, in Anderson, Ind., to Lewis and Ruby (Jones) Barker.

He graduated from Lapel High School in 1949, and he played on the Lapel basketball team that defeated the Anderson Indians in sectional play.

Bill retired in 1993 from Phillips Iron and Metal in Anderson after over 40 years of employment.

He was a member of East Lynn Christian Church in Anderson; was active in working with the Lapel Babe Ruth and Little League programs; and was an avid bowler, golfer and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Roberta M. (Scott) Barker; three sons, Kip (wife, Ann) Barker of Fort Wayne, Phil (wife, Colleen) Barker of Middletown and Richard Barker of Lapel; four grandchildren, Holly (husband, Jason) Cannaday of Anderson, Airman 1st Class Andrew (wife, Leslie) Barker of Eglin Airforce Base, Fla., and Emily Barker and Lilly Barker, both of Fort Wayne; three great-grandchildren; Kathryn, Kyle and Kimberly Cannaday; his brother, Jack (wife, Doris) Barker of Lapel; and several nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Max Barker.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 N. Main St., Lapel, with the Rev. Susan Cameron officiating. Burial will follow at Brookside Cemetery, Lapel.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to East Lynn Christian Church, 522 E. 53rd St., Anderson, IN 46013, or to the American Heart Association.
