Letter: Property tax caps pointless without reform
Anyone who thinks property tax caps (now being discussed in the Legislature) will lower our property taxes is misinformed. We purchased our house Oct. 14, 2009, and last year’s property taxes (2008) were about $950. On Oct. 15, the new bill comes out and the bill jumps to more than $1,500.
The property tax statement was sent to the previous owners and we didn’t have time to appeal within the 45 days. The assessor told us there was nothing we could do about the bill since it was past 45 days. It just doesn’t seem fair our property tax bill rose 50 percent and the assessed value of the home is $45,000-plus more than we paid for it in October 2009 and there is nothing I can do.
Capping the property tax caps will only make the assessment on your home more next year rise so the government won’t lose money. Capping property taxes is a nice gesture, but it’s pointless without a reform to property assessments.
