Library plans scrapbooking class

The Pendleton Community Library, 595 Water St., will host a three-hour beginners scrapbooking class at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17. Those participating should bring colored markers or pens, scissors, scrapbook paper, double-backed tape or acid-free glue. The class will be taught by Jane Cassin, and class size is limited to 15. Call (765) 778-7527 to reserve a spot.

Jr. baseball board meets Jan. 14

The January board meeting for Pendleton Jr. Baseball will be Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Falls Park Conservation Building. All meetings are open to the public. For complete PJB news and general information, visit the Web site at www.eteamz.com/pjb.

Foundation awards funds to groups

The South Madison Community Foundation recently awarded more than $12,000 to the following organizations: Animal Protection League for the FIDO/shelter dog program; The Art Association of Madison County for its Student Exhibition 2009; Friendly Flock Preschool for its Getting Ready to Read program and the United Way of Madison Co. Inc., for its Born Learning program.

Senior cards program resumes

The Senior Cards in the Park program has resumed at the Falls Park Community Building. Times are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Free coffee and doughnuts are served.

Soccer league registration Friday

The Pendleton Youth Soccer League will hold spring 2009 registration Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and Jan. 24 from noon to 4 p.m. Registration will be onsite at Just4Kicks in Pendleton. Those wishing to participate may also register online at www.pendletonsoccer. com.

Youth commission opens grant cycle

The South Madison Community Foundation’s Lapel Youth Commission and South Madison Youth Commission will accept applications for its February grant cycle. Requests should be limited to no more than $1,000. Applications are due to the Foundation office on Feb. 1, 2009. EMT certification class begins Jan. 13

Registrations are being accepted for Saint John’s next EMT certification class, which will begin Jan. 13. The class will meet from 6 to 10 p.m., two nights a week at the Pendleton Fire Station. The schedule includes some Saturday sessions.  For more information and an application, contact Dana Scott, R.N., at (765) 646-8529 or e-mail dlscott@ sjhsnet.org.

Tuition includes CPR training, the textbook and other class materials. Following successful completion of the course, program graduates are eligible for the State of Indiana Certification Examination and the National EMT Registry Examination.

Application for the state certification is dependent upon passing this examination. This course is required to be a paramedic.

To be considered for the program, applicants must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED. All students must read, write, and speak the English language fluently. Class size is limited.

Book discussion tonight at library

“Pillars of the Earth” by Ken Follet will be the book discussed at the Pendleton Community Library at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Retirement plan topic of class

“Retirement Planning” is the topic for the next South Madison Community School Corporation Community Education class meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Superintendent’s Office. The hour- long financial workshops are free and open to the public. A 30-minute Q & A session will be offered at the close of the session for those desiring to stay longer.

Workbooks will be provided and will be led by professional financial advisers – advance registration is required. Classes meet in the SMCSC Administrative Services Center at 203 S. Heritage Way, Pendleton, IN. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Call (765) 778-2152 or write wthompson@smadison.k12.in.us to sign up.

Booth applications available for fair

The Pendleton Fall Heritage Craft and Arts Fair, held each year in Falls Park, is set for Sept. 11 and 12. Those interested in a booth should send their name, address and craft to Century and a Half Club, P. O. Box 183, Pendleton, IN 46064.

Student calendars available at library

The 2009 student arts calendar are on sale at the Pendleton Community Public Library.

Calendars are $15 each, and proceeds benefit the Friends of the Pendleton Community Public Library. The calendars include Jaycie Haywood’s painting of her back yard, Noah Hendershot’s depiction of a covered bridge on a summer’s day, and a photo taken by Jessica Shetterley that reminds us that there are “more than fields in Indiana.” The calendar also includes reproductions of original artwork by Leigh Ann Boram, which is currently displayed in the library’s periodical room.

South Madison seeks instructors

South Madison Community School Corporation is requesting course proposals from potential instructors. Courses may be in a wide range of areas such as fitness, computers, arts and crafts and personal enrichment. While instructors are not required to hold a teaching degree or certification, they should be highly qualified to instruct the proposed course. A course proposal can be obtained online at www.smadison.k12.in.us or by calling (765) 778-2152.

Living biography series March 14

The Pendleton Community Public Library in cooperation with Indiana Public Radio and WIPB invites you to be in the company of local legends. Throughout the year, four renowned Hoosiers will be interviewed in the library’s community room where they will share stories and life lessons with a live audience.

The interviews will be recorded for future radio and television broadcasts. Tickets are $15 each, or two for $25. Seating is limited. For additional information or questions, contact the library at (765) 778-7527.

Pendleton Friends of the Library’s third annual chili cook-off saw its biggest crowd yet, according to Arlene Shannon of the Pendleton Community Library.

  • Indiana 13 project begins near Fortville on Monday FORTVILLE, Ind. — Indiana 13 will close near Fortville on Monday as crews begin work on a Major Moves Project along the roadway, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). INDOT's official detour will guide motorists along Indiana 67 through Pendleton and onto Interstate 69, before returning them to Indiana 13.

  • Pendleton girls win cross country sectional PENDLETON — After a team meeting and a few anxious moments, Pendleton Heights got back on the winning track and just at the right time. The Arabians pulled together and claimed their own girls cross country sectional title Tuesday by grouping three runners in the top 10 and four in the top 15. PH scored 56 team points to 63 for Mount Vernon.

  • Area roundup: Shenandoah beats Lapel volleyball The Raiders rallied from one game down to win in four games over the Bulldogs. Yardley Collett paced the winners with 22 kills, 20 assists, four aces and three blocks. Teammate Kirstyn Pierce had 12 kills, five aces and nine digs.
