Pendleton Heights High School Class of 2009 — top 10 percent

PENDLETON — Continuing through May 6 The Pendleton News will introduce the top ten percent students from the Class of 2009 at Pendleton Heights High School. Students ranked three through 10 are respresented today.



Kala Fields

Class Rank: 3

Grade Point Average: 12.948

Parents: Lynn & Rick Fields

Kala is a member of Spanish Club, Spanish National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, Quiz Bowl Team, Beta Club and Peer Tutor. She is a member of the Anderson First Church of the Nazarene, where she works in the nursery and is a Van Ministry co-captain. She is Gala Committee member for the Anderson Paramount Theatre. Kala enjoys reading, spending time with family and friends and spending time at church. She plans to attend Anderson University to double-major in biology and Christian ministries.



Chris Soverns

Class Rank: 4

Grade Point Average: 12.477

Parents: Robert & Laura Soverns

Chris is a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, Physics Club, French Club, Pendletones, Thespian Society and School Theater. He is also a member of the Anderson Area Children’s Choir/Youth Chorale and St Mary’s Church, where he hosts a teen Bible study. Chris plans to attend Purdue University to study physics.



Renae

Scheckelhoff

Class Rank: 5

Grade Point Average: 12.333

Parents: Michael & Susan Scheckelhoff

Renae is a member of Beta Club, Spanish Club, Spanish Honor Society, Pendleton Players, Thespian Society, Pendletones, Hoofprint, Fine Arts Academic Team, tennis team and 4-H. She is a member of St Ambrose Church, where she participates in the band and youth group. Renae enjoys dancing, writing fiction, photography and reading. She plans to attend Indiana University to study journalism or public relations. She would like to work for a magazine or a Web site.



Emily Price

Class Rank: 6

Grade Point Average: 12.185

Parents: Joe & Terri Price

Emily is a member of Beta Club, Sunshine Society, TATU, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Spanish Club. She is active in her church youth group at Edgewood Baptist Church and volunteers at St John’s Hospital. Emily loves to read and experiment with hairstyles, makeup and clothing. Emily plans to attend Indiana Wesleyan University to study pre-medical science and pursue a career as a physician’s assistant and work in an emergency room or the OR.



Tiffany Held

Class Rank: 7

Grade Point Average: 11.964

Parents: Alan & Mary Held

Tiffany has been a member of the class steering committee, student council, sophomore class vice president and Jr./Sr. class president. She is a member of National Honor Society, National Beta Club, Spanish Club, Spanish National Honor Society, Sunshine Society and TATU. She played volleyball for two years and varsity softball for four years. Tiffany has started a Leadership Club for Athletes, is a Student of Character representative for PHHS and was a spokesperson for the National Federation of High Schools on Sportsmanship. Her hobbies include reading, working out and hanging out with family and friends. She is a member of the Pendleton First United Methodist Church, where she works in the nursery and Vacation Bible School in the summer. Tiffany will attend the United States Military Academy at West Point. Her major is undecided.



Sara Niccum

Class Rank: 8

Grade Point Average: 11.945

Parents: Tom and Susan Niccum

Sara is a member of the Spell Bowl team, German Club, band and National Honor Society. She plans to attend Xavier University or Ball State University to major in communication/electronic media.



Theadora Smythe

Class Rank: 9

Grade Point Average: 11.782

Parents: Julie Smythe

Theadora is a member of Spanish Club, Spanish Honor Society, Beta Club, Scimitar Editor, Sunshine Society and is an EMT Rookie. She enjoys reading, traveling, yoga, cooking, language studies, culture and alternative medicine. Theadora plans to attend Indiana University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in international studies and complete a double minor in Spanish and Italian. Following four years at IU, she would like to enroll in a physician’s assistant program, followed by working with “Doctors Without Borders.” She would also like to attend culinary school and open an eclectic restaurant.



Hannah Cantrell

Class Rank: 10

Grade Point Average: 11.778

Parents: Eddie & Angie Cantrell; Rick & Donna Coffman

Hannah is a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, student council, Spanish Club, Spanish National Honor Society, Sunshine Society, TATU, VOICE, Rookie EMT and Pendletones. She enjoys running, exercising, fitness and dance classes. Hannah plans to attend Purdue University to major in nursing and minor in Spanish. Her career possibilities include becoming a registered nurse or nurse practitioner.

People told him the same thing when he opened his original Daddio’s Italian Café location in Fortville. And that was 12 years ago. A steady stream of happy customers has kept his hands in the homemade dough — in fact, around 80 percent of his customers have driven the extra miles to satisfy their cravings since the move.

  • Chili draws a crowd at Pendleton library PENDLETON, Ind. — Although the weather turned mild Sunday, it didn’t keep area residents from sampling a favorite winter dish for a cause. Pendleton Friends of the Library’s third annual chili cook-off saw its biggest crowd yet, according to Arlene Shannon of the Pendleton Community Library.

  • Indiana 13 project begins near Fortville on Monday FORTVILLE, Ind. — Indiana 13 will close near Fortville on Monday as crews begin work on a Major Moves Project along the roadway, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). INDOT's official detour will guide motorists along Indiana 67 through Pendleton and onto Interstate 69, before returning them to Indiana 13.

  • Pendleton loses 2-1 in overtime In a heartbreaking 2-1, double-overtime loss to the Greenfield-Central Cougars, the Pendleton Heights Arabians just missed the chance to advance to the 2009 IHSAA girls soccer sectional finals. But they sure put up a good fight.

  • Pendleton girls win cross country sectional PENDLETON — After a team meeting and a few anxious moments, Pendleton Heights got back on the winning track and just at the right time. The Arabians pulled together and claimed their own girls cross country sectional title Tuesday by grouping three runners in the top 10 and four in the top 15. PH scored 56 team points to 63 for Mount Vernon.

  • Area roundup: Shenandoah beats Lapel volleyball The Raiders rallied from one game down to win in four games over the Bulldogs. Yardley Collett paced the winners with 22 kills, 20 assists, four aces and three blocks. Teammate Kirstyn Pierce had 12 kills, five aces and nine digs.
