‘Cake Boss’ cooks Italian live

Buddy Valastro releases new cookbook, appearing in Indy

ANDERSON, Ind. — Baking and cooking are almost synonymous with the holidays.

TV reality star and owner of the famous Carlo’s Bakery in Hoboken, N.J., Buddy Valastro is doing his best to get area residents into the holiday spirit with his live show Wednesday in Indianapolis.

The holiday show at the Murat Theatre at the Old National Centre will include cake decorating, audience interaction, humor and contests.

His live shows across the country coincide with the recent release of “Cooking Italian with the Cake Boss” cookbook.

“What I really wanted to do with this book is bring back the family dinner,” Valastro said. “The recipes in this book are the ones I grew up with and I wanted to share my favorites and my family’s favorites with readers.”

He is often affiliated with baking through his TLC hit, “Cake Boss,” which documents operations at the family bakery in New Jersey and the competition cake decorating reality show “The Next Great Baker.”

Valastro said cooking is the other “very personal side to the Valastro family,” and he said he wanted to share that with his fans.

His favorite recipe, included in the book, is “Sunday Gravy, baby,” Valastro said. “Every Sunday the whole famiglia gets together to cook and eat. It’s a delicious dish and a proud family tradition.”

Growing up around cooking it got into his blood; he said, pointing out that when he wasn’t at the bakery baking with his father he was at home in the kitchen with his mother and grandmother.

“There is this strong connection between family and food that brings everybody together,” Valastro said. “I wanted to give readers the recipes and tips to put together a delicious family meal.” In addition to the live 7:30 p.m. show Wednesday, he will sign books from noon to 1 p.m. at the Meijer on Carmel Drive in Carmel.

“I actually love the book signings,” Valastro said. “Most of the time we’re at a bookstore, so it’s a smaller, more private setting and I really get to talk to my fans and have a conversation.”
