Homegrown Hollywood Film Festival features local people, places

ANDERSON, Ind. — A short conversation led to the creation of the Homegrown Hollywood Film Festival, set for Saturday at the Paramount Theatre.

The festival features 18 films, each with a Madison County connection. Some are short music videos featuring home-based actors; others reach more than 80 minutes, such as “Finding Xanadu,” a mockumentary about a local filmmaker.

The films will be shown in three sessions at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Paramount for individual sessions or for the entire day.

Among the films:

u “Jeffie Was Here,” a humorous cross-country relationship journey, directed by Anderson University grad Todd Edwards.

u “Leach,” filmed in Anderson, where Dougherty, as a recovering alcoholic, finds himself thrust into a situation that threatens his life and the lives of his family.

u “Dry Places,” a two-minute short filmed at a local gravel pit.

A full list and schedule can be found at www.homegrown

hollywoodfilmfestival.com.

As of Wednesday, preparations were under way to prepare the Paramount for the festival. All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the historic Paramount Theatre Centre and Ballroom.

The idea for the festival came to local filmmaker Jim Dougherty while he was thinking of screening a local movie at the Paramount. As he talked with the Paramount’s Gayle Jones Burris, the idea of a festival surfaced.

“It sort of grew out of a conversation Gayle and I were having about the possibility of screening one of the films I did, ‘Leach,’” Dougherty said. “I thought it would be a great venue to screen local films.”

Some films have been shot in Anderson. Others feature Anderson residents or behind-the-scenes people who played a large part in creating the film.

Dougherty said, “The festival is about raising money for the Paramount and to let people know that Central Indiana is a great place for films to be made.”

Dougherty’s 3 O’Clock Productions is producing the event.

Dougherty also said he plans to hold a similar second festival in September.

When I first came to Anderson in 1951, Jim Carter had been named head football coach at Anderson High School. At that time, football at AHS was little more than an activity to get out of the way to make room for basketball season. The Indians were known to play two games in the same week to shorten the season.
