The Highland High School Choral Spring Concert will be an exciting night, but a sad goodbye.
About 140 students belonging to the school’s competing choirs, the Highland Singers, Starliters, Impulse and Madrigals, will be performing their award-winning shows for the last time as a group at 7 p.m. today.
“They are doing their spring shows, which would include Broadway selections, some gospel and some current soundtracks from movies, and then all of them will be doing their competition shows,” said Laura Dyer, director of choral activities. “There will also be special music by soloists in-between each act.”
Josh Martin, a sophomore who sings with the Highland Singers, is looking forward to the performance tonight, but has mixed feelings.
“I’m kind of sad since it is the seniors’ last year,” Martin, 16, said. “But I love the show. It’s going to be really fun. I just like performing it so I’m kind of excited about it.
“I like being here with my friends. I like performing in front of people, and I like to sing. It’s something I’ve done my whole life.”
Dyer said the variety in the music should appeal to everyone’s tastes. Three of the choirs will be singing pieces from their award-winning shows, including Impulse, which was named grand champion in the high school show choir division at Music in the Parks at Kings Island in April. The Highland Singers and Starliters won awards January through April.
Martin’s favorite song that his choir performs is a ballad by U2, “With or Without You.”
“We really get into it,” he said. “It gets really emotional — the seniors start to cry. For instance, at a Florida performance a couple months ago, the seniors were crying. It was really sad since it was their last year performing.”
Although a little nostalgic, all the choir students are excited about this last show, and would like people to see how hard they worked, Martin said.
“People need to come watch because it’s a really rocking show!” he said excitedly. “We rock, and people will love us.”
