Welcome to Club Swing.
It’s where the music’s hot and drinks are cool.
And it should provide a big season finale for the Anderson Symphony Orchestra when it joins with the jazzy Five by Design quintet for a concert on March 29.
Minneapolis’ celebrated Five by Design will sing and swing at the Paramount Theatre Centre, 1124 Meridian Plaza, at 7:30 p.m.
“We always like to end with a bang,” said Symphony Conductor Richard Sowers finishing his 18th season with the ASO.
The Symphony played with Five by Design two seasons ago when the singers performed Radio Days, one of their four productions, that featured such World War II hits as “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “White Christmas.”
“It was a different program, different music altogether,” said Sowers. “Of course, there were different sets, costumes, everything.”
On March 29, Five by Design will jump into swing.
This time around, they’ll celebrate the music era of 1937 to 1955 with such classics as Spike Jones’ “Cocktails for Two,” Woody Herman’s “Woodchoppers Ball” and Cole Porter’s “Begin the Beguine.” The show opens with the frenetic “Bugle Call Rag” by Benny Goodman and finishes with Louis Prima’s lively “Sing, Sing, Sing.”
Commissioned by the Baltimore Symphony, Five by Design added Club Swing to its roster in 2000. The show follows the rise and fall of the big band era at the fictional ClubSwing in the Hotel Crosby where “the music’s hot, the drinks are cool and the dance floor is always open.”
But don’t expect the audience to go into full dance swing; there’s not enough space between some of the seats at the Paramount for dancing.
Five by Design brings its own pianist and drummer. The rest is left up to the orchestra which plays upstage, behind the singers. Don Jenkins, bass player for the orchestra, has also played swing at Beef n Boards.
“The orchestra will be set up differently. It looks more like a bandstand for a big band. They had a sophisticated light show and it has palm trees and other elements, so visually it’s a real delight as are the sounds,” Sowers said.
