At the Library: Summer reading for children

Everybody’s reading in the Children’s Department at the Anderson Public Library. Join in on the fun and come in and sign up. I picked out a few of my favorites for you and they are just waiting to be checked out.

-----

"The Dot & The Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics," By Norton Juster

“Here is a book for children of all ages, it inspired me to appreciate art as a child.”

Once upon a time there was a sensible straight line who was hopelessly in love with a beautiful dot. But the dot, though perfect in every way, only had eyes for a wild and unkempt squiggle. Does creativity imply disorder? Can the line learn to be creative without becoming a squiggle?

"Chasing Vermeer ," By Blue Balliett; illustrated by Brett Helquist

“This is a children’s novel about famous artwork and intrigue. There are puzzles within puzzles and there are clues even in the illustrations.”

When a book of unexplainable occurrences brings Petra Andalee and Calder Pillay together, strange things start to happen — seemingly unrelated events connect, an eccentric old woman seeks their company, and an invaluable Vermeer painting disappears.

-------

"The Art Lesson," Written and illustrated by Tomie dePaola.

Tommy can’t wait to start his art class at school. But once there, he is surprised to find rules! His art teacher wants him to copy her drawing, and he wants to create his own.

-----

"Emily’s Art," By Peter Catalanotto

“What a gorgeous painting,” exclaimed the judge of Ms. Fair’s first-grade art contest. “What a beautiful rabbit!” For Emily, the words are a shock. Her painting is of her dog, Thor, not a rabbit. But instead of thinking: What’s wrong with this judge? Emily takes the words and the judgment, to heart. Just as she takes her art. Not everyone, not Ms. Fair, or even Emily’s best friend, Kelly, can see that at first.
