ANDERSON — For the third year, lovers of dance will gather for the Holiday Ballroom Dance, as part of 2009’s Paramount Theatre Centre Festival of Trees.
Kay Anderson, organizer for the occasion, said the evening originally began as a separate event.
“We have ballroom dance classes on Tuesday nights, and some people decided that, if they were going to go dancing, they’d just go on Tuesday nights,” Anderson said.
“As an extension of their classes, we started having a seventh week of classes. Then we were running into the Festival of Trees, so we thought, ‘Why not have an extra night of activity for the Festival of Trees?’”
This year’s editions of the dance and festival are especially significant, she added. “In addition to celebrating the Festival of Trees, we’re also celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Paramount.”
For $12 a person, dance fans can enjoy tripping the light fantastic, especially because that light is coming from the dozen or so Christmas trees specially decorated for the 11-day festival.
“We have open dancing to holiday music and viewing of the trees,” Anderson said. “Also, Rog and Amy Greenawalt, 2006 USA Dance National DanceSport champions, are going to perform.” Rog Greenawalt will also provide music as the DJ.
Also on the bill will be Holly Renz and Ryan Hutchins performing the salsa.
Midway through the 7 to 10 p.m. event, Anderson will announce the personalities who will be participating in the second annual Dance Like the Stars.
“It’s all social dancing, and people like that, but a lot of them have never seen our theater,” Anderson said. “We usually offer tours, if they haven’t been there, and they’re always surprised by the size of the dance floor. And they’re surprised by the quality of it, because it is the 1929 original ballroom dance floor. And it’s a real wooden floor.
“That’s what’s special. And then, the lights of the trees around the room is just delightful. It’s a great way to start the season.”
