Footloose Club hosts dance Sunday
ANDERSON — Square dancers are invited to a Footloose Club dance Sunday at Rangeline Community Center, 1405 N. Rangeline Road. New dancers are admitted free.
The caller is Darrin Henry; the cuer is Judy Mouton. Pre-rounds at 6 p.m. and square dance 6:30 to 9 p.m. There will be a food table and door prizes.

Wood speaker at Noon Lions Club
ANDERSON — Nancy Wood, the new executive director of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra, will be the guest speaker Thursday at the Anderson Noon Lions Club. The group meets at noon in the basement of First United Methodist Church, 1215 Jackson St.
Black History luncheon Saturday
ANDERSON — The first Black History Luncheon will be Saturday at Allen Chapel AME Church Fellowship Hall, 1610 Sheridan St. The featured speaker for the 11 a.m. luncheon will be the Rev. W.J. Jackson, pastor of Union Missionary Baptist Church, Muncie.
Tickets are $10; they can be purchased by contacting any member of the organizations or by calling 642-2192.
The event is sponsored by the Anderson/Madison County Black Chamber of Commerce; IBE/Anderson Black Expo and Concerned Ministers of Anderson.
Trinity prepares traditional meal
ANDERSON — Trinity Episcopal Church, 1030 Delaware St., served pancakes and sausage on Shrove Tuesday. The men’s guild served the traditional meal on the eve of Ash Wednesday.
Trinity Church will observe the beginning of Lent with two Eucharists at noon and 7 p.m. Wednesday.
IU alumni sponsor bowling outing
ANDERSON — The Indiana University Alumni Association of Madison County is sponsoring a bowling outing at Cooper’s Sport Bowl from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28. They plan to watch, as a group, the IU vs. Iowa basketball game on TV at Shout’s at 5 p.m.
The cost for two hours of bowling with shoes is “free” to the first 50 IU alums who sign up. The cost to all others is $5. Call John E. Etchison at 649-2496 or e-mail etch99@comcast.net to sign up.
AMVETS Post serving breakfast

Jim Bailey: Jim Carter made football a respectable sport at AHS
When I first came to Anderson in 1951, Jim Carter had been named head football coach at Anderson High School. At that time, football at AHS was little more than an activity to get out of the way to make room for basketball season. The Indians were known to play two games in the same week to shorten the season.

Phil Hatter regularly told his children that once they were all grown, he would build a log cabin in the country. They didn’t believe him. “I think log homes are really neat, but they have to be put in the right place,” he said.
