ANDERSON, Ind. — A compilation of news items from the Madison County area:

Velvet Soul in concert Sept. 11

ANDERSON — Velvet Soul, a contemporary/rhythm and blues band, will be in concert from 7 to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, in the Paramount Theatre Centre and Ballroom.

Tickets are $15 for dinner and music and available in advance at the box office at 1124 Meridian Plaza, or by calling 642-1234.



Rummage donations sought for sale

ALEXANDRIA — Clean rummage and furniture donations are being sought for the Sept. 11 sale for Beauty of Ashes Transitional Home.

Summitville church hosts hog roast

SUMMITVILLE — Union Chapel Commuity Church, 14950 N. 100W, Summitville, will have its annual hog roast at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11.

There will be free food, a magic show and musical entertainment. For more information, call Mike Thompson at 724-9903.



Reservations due for class reunion

ALEXANDRIA — Reservations are needed for the Alexandria-Monroe High School Class of 1970 reunion planned for Sept. 11 at Grandview Golf Course, 1907 Northshore Blvd., Anderson.

Church to host family movie night

MIDDLETOWN — Pastor Ernie Troxell and the Middletown United Methodist Church invite all families in the community to Family Movie Night at the church, 625 High St., at 6 p.m. Wednesday. “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” will be shown; drinks and popcorn will be provided.



Fall Fest looking for vendors

MARKLEVILLE — Applications are available for the third annual Markleville Fall Fest to be held Oct. 2.

Cost per booth is $10 for non-electric/$15 electric.

Prostate cancer screening offered

NOBLESVILLE — Riverview Hospital will offer prostate cancer screening to all men over age 40 on Sept. 18.

The screening will include a PSA blood test and quick digital rectal exam. Cost is $25.

Screenings will take place in the Riverview Cancer Center from 8 to 10 a.m. by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, call (317) 776-7247.



Lions Club to serve Saturday breakfast

DALEVILLE — The Daleville Lions Club, Sixth and Edwards streets, will have a community breakfast on Saturday from 7 to 10 a.m.

This is the first breakfast of the season. Cost is $6 for adults for all-you-can-eat, and children under 6 eat free.

The menu includes eggs and sausage, pancakes, biscuits and sausage gravy, coffee, milk and orange juice.

  • Jim Bailey Jim Bailey: Jim Carter made football a respectable sport at AHS

    When I first came to Anderson in 1951, Jim Carter had been named head football coach at Anderson High School. At that time, football at AHS was little more than an activity to get out of the way to make room for basketball season. The Indians were known to play two games in the same week to shorten the season.
