Gardener award presented to Angie Phenis

The Madison County Master Gardener Association and Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service has presented Angie Phenis of Markleville with the “Outstanding Master Gardener Award” recognizing her excellence as a Purdue Master Gardener serving in Madison County.

Angie Phenis completed her Master Gardener intern training in Madison County in 2006. Almost immediately, she became involved in the Madison County Master Gardener Program.

Fundraising in any organization is not an easy task but Phenis has served as chairperson of the Madison County Master Gardener Association Plant Sale since 2007. Funds raised from the plant sale are primarily used for horticulture scholarships awarded to Madison County students but also for gardening education efforts in local communities.

Phenis and a dedicated team of Master Gardeners have raised over $16,000 through the annual plants sale for scholarships and gardening education projects during her tenure as plant sale chairperson. She has also participated in the Madison County MG Garden Tour in 2007 and 2009 by providing her home gardens as a tour site. She has given gardening presentations to local groups helping to fulfill the mission of the Purdue MG Program in her local community.

Phenis has served as a mentor for several Master Gardener interns who have later joined the Madison County MG Association to become active members. She is an active Advanced Master Gardener and participates in many educational and volunteer events throughout the year including serving on the planning committee for the Indiana Garden School, helping with the Advanced Master Gardener Training, and assisting other garden tour participants.
