ELWOOD, Ind. —
Mary Beth Dunnichay has been on a record-writing spree recently and one of the marks she surpassed hit very close to home.
Last week Dunnichay posted a mark of 393.5 off the springboard and that topped an Elwood pool record of 391.7 — set by her older brother Caleb.
“It felt special, it felt really good,” said Dunnichay as she was in the midst of a car trip to Iowa to compete in the USA Diving Winter National Championships. “It is neat that we both get our names up there side-by-side. Of course mine is just a little bit higher.”
The second record was set last Saturday in the Central Indiana Conference meet at Oak Hill. Over an 11-dive stretch she amassed 638.5 points. That broke the pool and conference mark set by Phil Jones.
“I didn’t even know who held that record until after I had broken it,” said Dunnichay. “I used to dive with him at the national diving center.”
Dunnichay, an Olympic diver off the platform, has had to make an adjustment for high school to springboard.
“This is a lot different,” she said. “The technique is so different. I feel pretty good about my chances (in the state meet), but I am now diving against people I don’t know, this being my first year. I’ve got to see what’s out there.”
Even after the Olympic experience, setting her sights on a state title is important.
“A state title would mean a lot,” said Dunnichay. “My brother won it (2004) and it would be nice to do it too. Plus the state meet is one where my family and friends can go watch when they can’t go to all of the different countries. Also, I get to swim with my teammates and compete for Elwood.”
