Blanton advances to state quarterfinals

ANDERSON, Ind. — Alexandria’s Luke Blanton continued his red-hot postseason run Friday night with his fourth pin in his past five matches to open competition at the state finals.

The Tigers’ senior star pinned Castle sophomore Patrick Schnell (29-12) in 3 minutes, 43 seconds to win on opening night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse for the third consecutive year.

Blanton (49-0), ranked No. 2 in the state at 138 pounds, will wrestle Culver Academies senior Anthony McHugh (44-4) in today’s quarterfinals.

Fifth-ranked McHugh pinned New Haven senior Reese Sieger in 1:49.

Quarterfinal matches begin at 9 a.m. The consolation finals are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and the state championship matches are slated to start at 7:30 p.m.

Admission to each session is $8.

    A balanced offensive attack and a dominating pitching performance paced the Frankton Eagles as they soared past the Winchester Eagles in the opening round of the IHSAA Class 2A baseball Sectional No. 40, 10-0.

    Last year at this time, Andrew Luck was in class at Stanford finishing up his degree in architecture design. So he missed the 10 voluntary practices marked as “organized team activities” that allow the offense to go against the defense in shorts and helmets for often energetic scrimmages.
    On Wednesday at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center, Luck reflected on his first three days of OTAs and said the experience is another that will help him improve for his second season as the Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback.
