FORTVILLE, Ind. —
With grit, determination and more heroes than can be fit in multiple headlines, Anderson topped No. 7-ranked Mount Vernon in overtime Tuesday night.
The Lady Tribe girls basketball team put five players in double digits on their way to an 83-75 victory.
Junior Chelsea Bentley scored 20 points and added nine rebounds, just ahead of Taylor Potts, who had 19 points and six rebounds. Da’sha Boyd scored 15 and Darien Thompson 11. The Indians had to finish regulation and play the entire overtime without Thompson, who suffered an injury to her mouth in a scrum on the floor.
Those efforts were needed to even force the extra period. The Marauders’ Erica Moore scored 33 points before fouling out in overtime and freshman guard Sydney Shelton hit 15 of 17 free throws on her way to a 25-point outing.
Bentley’s contribution was especially noteworthy. In the second half the Tribe used her to attack the middle of the Mount Vernon defense.
“We were able to get the ball to her in the high post,” said AHS coach Chad Cook. “She can pass and she can move with the ball.”
Potts played well throughout, but her contributions were critical in aiding Anderson’s recovery from a small hole that the Indians were in for much of the contest. She scored back-to-back baskets in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to make the score 49-47 in favor of the visitors.
The Marauders came back to lead 65-60 with 1:32 left in the regulation on a pair of Shelton free throws. Bentley got three of those points back by hitting the first of two free throws, missing the second, getting the rebound and hitting the put back.
With 6.3 ticks left, Savannah Jones hit one of two free throws to tie the game and force overtime.
“I told them (before overtime) that we had this now,” Cook said. “I told them we could settle down and play.”
That worked as the Marauders were never really in the final four minutes. Boyd hit a pair of 3-pointers and a couple of free throws to outscore the home team by herself in the extra period.
Mount Vernon finished the game with 29 turnovers, 12 of them coming in the third period when it coughed up a seven-point lead.
“I think we forced them into a pace they didn’t really want,” Cook said. “We wanted to go at Moore with two when she got the ball. We didn’t do that very well early, but we learned.”
The Tribe were outrebounded 44-32 with 14 of those Marauder boards coming from the 6-foot-1 Moore.
Sophomore Dabriona Williams came in to play some varsity time after doing a stint earlier in the evening on the JV team. She still had her JV shorts on. She hit two big second-half shots.
“I had put her into the North Central game when it mattered,” Cook said. “I thought it gave her confidence. Anybody, one through 13 can come through for this team.”
Anderson is now 5-1 and the Marauders drop to 5-2. The Indians are at Richmond on Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. contest.
