Indians slay Spartans

GREENFIELD, Ind. — The last time these two girls basketball teams met on Jan. 17, Anderson defeated Connersville 83-74 in overtime. Lady Tribe coach Chad Cook knew the Spartans would come out with a chip on their shoulder ready for revenge in Tuesday’s opening round of the Class 4A sectional.

“After beating them earlier in the season by nine, I knew they were going to be ready for us the second time around,” Cook said. “Fortunately for us tonight, we found a way to win.”

Down 13 with 2:30 left in the third quarter, Anderson started its comeback and continued to roll as it came away with a 50-46 victory.

When Connersville senior Caitlin Duvall hit her third consecutive 3-pointer in 45 seconds to extend the Spartan lead to 13, Cook called a timeout.

“I hate calling timeouts during runs like that because I want to let the girls figure out how to handle the change in momentum,” he said. “But in the huddle they finally woke up and were ready to play.”

Although he didn’t want to take the timeout, his girls answered in a big way.

Despite scoring just three points until that juncture, junior Darien Thompson led the charge as she hit two quick 3-pointers to cut the deficit to seven. She added another bucket a minute later as the Tribe went on a 12-4 run to pull within three at 40-37 as the third quarter ended. Thompson finished with 12 points. Sophomore Chelsea Bentley added 11 points for Anderson.

Credit Anderson’s tough full-court pressure which fueled its comeback.

The Tribe held the Spartans to 32 percent (16-of-49) from the field and 4-of-23 from behind the arc, while forcing 12 turnovers.

“After we started pressuring them, we were able to force turnovers and easy fast-break buckets,” Cook said.

Anderson had a chance to start the fourth tied as junior Na Shaunda Rayford was fouled as time expired in the third attempting a 3-pointer, but she missed all three free throw attempts.

Rayford made it up for the team, however, as she connected on a 3-pointer with 6:22 left in the game to give the Lady Tribe a 41-40 lead, its first advantage since late in the first quarter.

Connersville was quick to answer with a bucket of its own to regain the lead, but the Lady Tribe didn’t flinch and went on a 9-4 run to finish the game and advance into the semifinal.

Anderson was held to just 37 percent (16-43) from the field and only converted 9-of-22 free throws. The Lady Tribe also committed 12 turnovers. Fixing these issues will be a point of emphasis in practice leading up to Friday’s game against New Castle.

“We will go back to practice and definitely work on these things,” Cook said. “I’m definitely expecting for us to come back strong Friday and come ready. I would be totally surprised if these girls don’t come out with their best.”
