PH moves on

GREENFIELD, Ind. — On the roster of every successful team is a player or two who will do the unpleasant work.

The ones who actually find satisfaction in this pursuit are worth their weight in wins to any coach.

Pendleton Heights sophomore Kiawna Cottrell was just that player Tuesday as the Arabians advanced to the second round of sectional play with a 55-45 victory over Greenfield-Central.

Greenfield senior guard LaRae Cruz needed 19 points to reach 1,000 for her career. Thanks to Cottrell, Cruz hit just 2-of-11 from the field and finished with 12 points.

“I wanted to keep her from driving,” said Cottrell. “She likes to drive. I played her to the left. I thought I was quicker than she was so I kept moving my feet.”

The defensive decision wasn’t one made just for this game. It has roots a bit deeper.

“The light bulb went off in Coach Shari Doud’s head,” said PHHS coach Doud of her idea to use Cottrell’s tenacity and athleticism. “I decided to take the best offensive player from the other team and put her on them.”

It has worked so far.

Yet there was still the matter of the Arabians getting enough points to win the game. That was a problem through two quarters as PH hit just 6-of-18 from the field and failed to take advantage of 12 first-half turnovers by the Cougars. As a result, Greenfield led 24-19 at the break.

In the third quarter, Pendleton Heights matched its halftime total in that eight-minute span. Of those 19 points, Kelsey Hubble had seven points and Quincey Gary added five. PH hit 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Going into the fourth quarter, the Arabians had a 38-31 lead.

In the final period, Kenzie Gustin hit both of her field-goal attempts and 7-of-8 free throws as the Cougars were unable to come up with steals and had to foul Pendleton down the stretch. Gustin finished with a game-high 23 points. Hubble was next with 13 and Gary had nine.

“They’re good on-ball defenders,” said Doud of the Cougars. “We were using the crossover (dribble), and it wasn’t working. Once we adjusted to their backcourt pressure, we settled down.”

Greenfield controlled the boards, 26-20, but Gustin grabbed seven of them for the Arabians. Cottrell was next with five.

Pendleton Heights will play in the first Friday semifinal against Richmond at 6 p.m.
