Bulldogs stomp Faubion, Lutheran

Gibson leads Lapel with 20 points

LAPEL, Ind. — It was Samaritan’s Feet night on Friday as Lapel faced Indianapolis Lutheran in an Indiana Crossroads Conference battle.

Both coaching staffs went sans shoes to raise awareness and to provide money for shoes for the less fortunate.  

It didn’t stop the Bulldogs from stomping on the Saints.  

Lutheran’s J.C. Faubion was averaging 25 points per game heading into Friday’s matchup, but Lapel wasn’t intimidated. The Bulldogs held the Saints sharpshooter to 12 points, crushing their opponents 62-37.

Lapel (14-3, 2-2) took the lead for good at the 4:48 mark of the first quarter.

Andrew Gibson lit up the first quarter, scoring 11 of his team-high 20 points, and Boston Fields shut down Faubion on defense.

Fields held Faubion to four points through the first three quarters. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter, when the Bulldogs were in full-fledged garbage time, that Faubion was able to score.

“I thought Boston did a fantastic job defensively on Faubion,” Lapel coach Jimmie Howell said.

With Faubion contained, the Bulldogs roared to a 19-8 lead after the first eight minutes and raised that to 38-10 at the half.

Lutheran (5-8, 1-3) went cold in the second quarter, hitting 1-of-12 from the field.

Lapel’s Drew Norton also helped pace his team on the offensive end, scoring 10 of his 16 points in the first half.

Howell feels like a big reason his team is on a seven-game win streak has been its ability to possess the basketball, something the Bulldogs showed against Lutheran. Lapel had just two first-half turnovers and a total of five heading into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs finished with 13 turnovers.

“We’ve been handling the ball a lot better,” Howell said. “We got sloppy in the second half a little bit, especially in the fourth quarter. But the turnovers is one of the reasons that we’ve been playing a little bit better.”

Heading into Friday night’s game, Howell worried about his team being able to focus on the Saints knowing that today’s game against Class 3A Guerin Catholic was looming large.

“It’s a tough weekend because it’s hard to keep kids looking at this game instead of ahead to a really, really good team,” he said. “I thought we did great. The kids did a great job of keeping focused throughout the week and coming into this game (and) taking care of business.

Brian Failinger led Lutheran with 23 points as he and Faubion scored all but two of their team’s points.  Failinger also paced his team with nine rebounds on the night.

Tanner Watkins had 11 for Lapel, while Matthew Conrad had 10. Brendan Hardwick and Conrad also cleaned up the boards with six apiece.
