In a way it doesn’t seem possible. But after a Sunday meeting with the county’s girls basketball coaches it became all too real.
Girls basketball starts for real on Monday, and that’s the same day that the boys teams can begin practice.
Actually none of our area teams actually begin Monday, but there’s two games on Tuesday. Anderson is at home against Indianapolis Arlington, and Pendleton Heights visits traditional rival New Castle.
Wednesday three more area teams get under way, all of them on the road. Highland tests Carmel, Frankton faces Union and Elwood tangles with Eastern Hancock. Two more lift the curtain on Thursday. Daleville hosts South Adams, and Liberty Christian is on the road at Greenwood Christian.
I don’t know whether the schools wanted to avoid Friday the 13th for superstitious reasons or because of football regionals, but there are no girls games that day. But the next day features seven area games.
But only Elwood and Madison-Grant are at home. The Panthers play Delta, and the Argylls open the season against Hamilton Heights. Alexandria opens at Wapahani, and Shenandoah gets it started at New Castle. The Indians are at Chatard in the only day game on the slate. Frankton is at Blue River, and Pendleton Heights travels to Muncie Central.
The teams will be previewed in the HB beginning Saturday morning. On that day the teams outside the county — Shenandoah, Madison-Grant and Daleville — will be covered. On Sunday, Pendleton Heights, Lapel, Alexandria, Frankton and Elwood get their turn. Then on Monday the city squads — Anderson, Highland and Liberty Christian — take center stage.
Soon the basketballs will fill the air and all will be right with the world again.
Also on the winter sports scene, wrestling practice began this past Monday, and girls swimming opened practice last week. Boys swimming opens practice Monday.
Soon there will be plenty of bargains for the entertainment dollar. I hope you will all fill up those bleachers and support our high school athletes.

The Indiana Pacers are holding a 10th Anniversary Game on Friday against the Washington Wizards. There will be a tribute to Melvin Simon and a banner in his honor will be raised prior to the tipoff.
Every fan will get a special 10th Anniversary commemorative ticket. There will also be a pregame autograph session featuring some members of the 1999-2000 NBA Finals team, along with players from the 2009 Fever squad. There also will be a special poster giveaway that night.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. and tipoff will be at approximately 7 p.m.
