MIDDLETOWN, Ind. —
Girls basketball season came to an end Friday for the Frankton Eagles, but it didn’t end quietly.
Frankton fell to the Winchester Golden Falcons 60-51 in the Class 2A Sectional 40 semifinals at Shenandoah High School.
“I thought they gave me everything they had without a doubt,” Eagles coach Dean Riddle said. “I thought they followed the game plan. You’re gonna have possessions where you made mistakes, but they gave us everything they had mentally and physically.”
Frankton had four players play the entire 32 minutes. The one that didn’t played more than 30 minutes.
The game was one where scoring runs were key. Frankton made runs to tie or take the lead as did the Falcons. But Winchester had the last run of the game.
The Falcons also had junior standout Jill Morrison, whose game-high 35 points contributed to the Eagles’ demise. Morrison hit on 11 of 23 field goals, including six of 10 3-pointers.
The Eagles led by as many as 11 points in the first half before falling behind by two points at halftime. Frankton led by early in the fourth quarter. Then Winchester went on a 7-0 run to take a 53-45 lead down the stretch.
Frankton was hurt by a scoring drought late in the second quarter. The Eagles saw their 11-point lead evaporate courtesy of a 15-2 run by the Falcons. During that six-minute-plus blitz, Morrison scored 11 of the 15 points for Winchester.
“We went through that stretch in the second quarter where we could not score,” Riddle said. “We made an adjustment at halftime to make Morrison curl off those double-screens a little more. That worked for a while. She’s a clutch player. She does what she has to do. You can see her demeanor change as the game gets tougher. She takes a lot of responsibility on herself and gets things done.”
The Falcons closed out the game by converting 11 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter.
Frankton (10-12) was led by its junior standout Kelsey Key, who scored 27 points. Carliegh Tucker was also in double figures with 17 points. Freshman post Kaylee Irwin pulled in 13 rebounds.
“I thought Kaylee did a great job for her first sectional,” Riddle said.
Joining Morrison in double figures for Winchester was sophomore Bailey Gates with 12 points.
Frankton’s only senior this season was Allie Rogers.
