With rain in the forecast, I spent most of Monday tilling the garden and mowing my very large yard.
When implements weren’t running, I could hear quail whistling in the field. While somewhat enjoying the task at hand, I noticed something. Some of my red raspberries appeared to be ripe as I tilled up the weeds around them. Also, as I mowed the edge behind the barn, I noticed a lot of wild black raspberries had turned red. Finally, I saw a few that were black. Two handfuls of each variety was just enough to cover a bowl of Shredded Wheat.
One thing I haven’t been seeing is young rabbits. A month ago, they were numerous. Hawks, dogs, cats, coyotes, foxes and birds of prey all go after these young rabbits. The one living in my yard was hit by a car.

A year ago, Kenny Philip’s best friend, Dave Coffin, died of cancer at age 40. These two men participated in the Tuesday night tournaments at Geist Reservoir. Coffin was the weigh master.
In memory of his friend, Philips and others are holding the Dave Coffin Memorial Tournament on Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. The entry fee is $60 per team with a guaranteed first-place prize of $1,000. Entries will be accepted until 30 minutes prior to start. Call Kenny Philips at (317) 412-5156 to pre-register.
“We already have 60 teams registered and that could jump to 80 by Saturday morning,” Philips said.
The proceeds from this contest will go to help Coffin’s wife with expenses. The Coffins lost their 10-year-old son a few years ago.

The Kids Fishing Derby at Shadyside Lake was a huge success. More than 120 kids participated in the contest. Thanks to the many fine sponsors who not only donated to the prize pool but also volunteered.
“It was the best turnout we have ever had,” said Ron Moody, BASS Pro Shops and Tracker Boats sponsored tournament angler.
I missed the derby to attend my daughter Jourdan’s graduation at Pendleton Heights. Watching Jourdan receive her diploma brought tears to my eyes.
Last Sunday will be memorable for more than my daughter’s graduation. My truck broke down on my way home from church. It was 11:30 a.m. and I had to be in Pendleton at 1 p.m.
My roadside insurance contacted Northwest Towing. I told them of my situation, and they sent someone immediately. We dropped the truck off at Pro Tree Racing in Emporia and then the wrecker driver took me home. I was in my seat on time.
In years past, men would jump out of their vehicles and help you push your stall to the edge of the road. I had to summon Brent Land, Jourdan’s step-father, to help me.
Thanks to all, me and my old truck are back on the road.
