Alexandria sweeps bowling sectional crowns

ELWOOD, Ind. — Alexandria swept the White River Valley I high school bowling sectional Saturday in Elwood. Both the boys and girls teams took home top honors.

The Alexandria girls qualified second for the day trailing Noblesville by 82 pins. With a clean slate, the two-game baker format roll-off final began with Alex coming out strong, winning the first game 188-153. Consistency came into play as the Tigers rolled a 184 while Noblesville faltered by bowling a 137. With only two teams advancing, the Anderson girls fell short to finish in a disappointing third.

On the boys side, conference champions Pendleton Heights came out strong and looked to be the front runner by qualifying as the top seed with a 3,017 pin total. Alexandria was close behind with a 2,837.

Noblesville and Anderson had the closest finish with Noblesville sliding in for the third and final spot to advance over Anderson by 20 pins. Going in to the final baker game, Anderson was leading Noblesville by one pin. Anderson faltered and rolled a 191 game while Noblesville scored a 212. Anderson still has hopes of advancing as the lone wild card for the Muncie regional. The Indians’ wait will be short as the results should be in by Sunday evening.

In the first match of the two-game stepladder finals, Alexandria outscored Noblesville 428-412, advancing to the finals against Pendleton Heights. Alexandria outscored Pendleton Heights in the first game 224-197 by striking out in the ninth and 10th frames. The second game started out even with both teams opening in the first frame. After a disappointing start, Alexandria was able to put together enough marks to score 191, while Pendleton struggled for a 166 game.

Alexandria’s boys coach Doug Elsworth summed up the day, “I think experience came into play. Even with losing four seniors this year, returning teammates Mason Ward, Tim Martin and Reid Schwinn stepped up. They had the experience that it sometimes takes to win a tournament like this. We had a good day.”

Sunday finishes up the tourney by changing from the team to the singles event. The boys will return to Wells Lanes, while the girls return to Lucky Strike. Both tournaments begin at 1 p.m.
