Ravens win thriller against former coach

CHICAGO — One buzzer beater wasn’t enough on Wednesday night so the Anderson University men’s basketball team made another one to defeat North Park University 91-89 in double overtime.

Phil Hogan hit a buzzer beater at the end of regulation to tie the score at 71-71 and force the first overtime.

The teams still couldn’t decide a winner after five more minutes, but Jamares McCloud hit a layup at the buzzer of the second overtime to give the Ravens the victory.

“We DID NOT quit,” said AU coach Owen Handy with emphasis. “We did not quit. Jamares ran the floor and put himself in position (to hit the game-winner) because he didn’t quit. (On Hogan’s shot) we told him to pop to the weak side of the floor and make a play and he did.”

The game pitted the last two coaches of Anderson University as former Raven hoopster Tom Slyder is in his first season at North Park.

Hogan led the Ravens with 27 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals, hitting 8 of 23 field goals and 11 of 17 free throws while playing all 50 minutes.

“Phil is 2-for-18 from behind the arc so I will be glad when his 3-pointers start falling,” said Handy. “His groin locked up, and he had cramps the last 12 minutes. Every time there was a break, we had the trainer work on him.”

Isaac Loechle had a career-high 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals, hitting 8 of 17 field goals, including five 3-pointers. The frontcourt duo of Carson Breckenridge (4-of-4), Nate Gross (3-of-3) and Andrew Larrick (4-of-4) were a combined 11-of-11 from the field.

Larrick had 10 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, and Gross and Breckenridge added nine points each. Micah Smith added seven points, eight rebounds, two assists and five steals off the bench. McCloud, who didn’t see the floor until overtime, added four points and three rebounds.

“Carson played fantastic,” said Handy. “He didn’t miss a shot and made a huge play on a lob that if he doesn’t make then we don’t win the game.”

AU shot 51 percent from the field, including 24-of-40 from the free-throw line while North Park was at 39 percent shooting, including 32-of-44 from the charity stripe.

AU (2-1) opens HCAC play on Saturday against Transylvania at 4 p.m.
