FRANKTON, Ind. —
After Frankton used the first half as a training exercise, the Eagles boys basketball team got down to business.
At the end of the game, Frankton had a 79-58 victory over Wes-Del and junior Aaron Korn had crossed the 1,000-point barrier.
The Warriors trailed by just five points, 38-33, at intermission and much of the reason was Frankton coach Brent Brobston’s insistence.
“We only pressed once lasst year and we’ve been working on it,” he said. “I told them we were going to stay in it for the whole first half. We didn’t do our rotations properly and we gave up four layups. It will be something they will learn from off the film.”
With the specter of the press lifted from sight, Frankton rolled away from Wes-Del in the third period to the tune of 25-13 for a 63-46 advantage.
“We challenged them in the third quarter to work hard and do the things we needed to do to win,” said Brobston. The Eagles responded as a team. In the period Frankton hit 9-of-14 from the field and had no turnovers. Five players scored at least one field goal.
Frankton’s final scoring tally looked similar as four players scored in double figures and those four accounted for all but nine of the home team’s points.
Korn topped all scorers with 24 points, 21 of those coming through the first three quarters. He only took one shot in the fourth quarter. His 1,000 points came midway through the second period (see sidebar).
Sophomore Austin Compton scored 18 points, hitting two-thirds of his nine field goals attempts. Nick Wright and Trevor Hughes each scored 14 points.
“We challenged Austin to get deeper into the defense and he did a good job of that,” said Brobston.
Justin Evans scored 20 for the Warriors and Sam Paul added 18. Those two were a combined 12-of-21. The visitors remained in the game for as long as they did by shooting the ball well. They hit half of their 40 filed goals and missed only four of 19 free throws.
“We thought they were going to be pretty good,” said Korn of Wes-Del.
The Eagles move to 3-0 and will host Eastbrook on Friday. “That game will be interesting,” said Brobston. “Eastbrook beat us last year.”
