GREENFIELD, Ind. — A central Indiana sheriff has given up his duties while he faces accusations of taking $4,000 in department money for his personal use, although he will keep the title and his full pay.
The agreement signed Monday between Hancock County Commissioners and Sheriff Bud Gray gives responsibility for the Sheriff's Department to Col. Donnie Munden, who has been the chief deputy sheriff.
Gray maintains in the agreement that he is innocent of the allegations that led to his Aug. 6 arrest on a felony charge of obstruction of justice while a special prosecutor considers other charges.
County Commissioner Brad Armstrong says Gray can't be forced from office since he is an elected official without being convicted or going through a lengthy impeachment process.
